NAGPUR: This may come as a New Year gift to motorists as the civic corporation plans to upgrade the existing 110 traffic signals across the city.
At present, most signals are non-functional during loadsheddings and this will now be a thing of the past. Traffic engineer N A Khan told TOI, "Of the 110 signals, 87 are more than 20 years old and need to be either replaced or upgraded. This will, however, be carried out in a phased manner."
Khan said that every signal will have a timer with LED display and in each phase, as many as 25 signals would be selected for upgradation. Apart from this, four new signals will be installed in every 15 months. The work of preparing terms and conditions for the proposal is in the final stages and a tender will be floated in this connection in the next few days. The project will be carried out on a BOT basis for the next 10 years.
