LED Street Light Replacement for Conventional Street Lighting Now a Reality

Remco Solid State Lighting Inc. (Toronto, Canada) has broken through the barrier to replace conventional street lighting with its recently patented SSL technology.

Its disruptive SSL technology utilizes the dynamic resistance of LEDs providing a LED light engine that is up to 98% power efficient–only a 2% power loss which enables optimal power and LED lighting efficiencies as verified in a pilot test as proof of concept.

In a pilot test at Camp Borden Military Base ( CCanada) where the Remco LED Street Light prototype was installed in May, 2007, Alex Savu, Energy Manager at Camp Borden, measured and reported the following light meter readings confirming that Remco’s LED Street Light achieved superior lighting results when compared to conventional HPS street lights:

At the Yellow line on road: Remco 1.3 F.C./14 LUX vs. conventional 0.7 F.C./7.5 LUX On average: Remco 1.2 F.C./13 LUX vs. conventional 0.9 F.C./9.7 LUX. he Remco prototype (a LED lighting fixture within a cobra head fixture) consumed 111 watts to replace 138 watt conventional HPS street lights (100 watt HPS bulb + 38 watt ballast) - a 20% energy savings at 40.1–47.7 lumens per watt (4470 useable lumens with a standard lens and approximately 5300 useable lumens without a lens).

When Remco completes its very own SSL luminaire design, incorporating its LED light engine, proprietary thermal management, and secondary optics, and with the usage of a LED supplier’s white light emitter at 100 lumens/watt, Remco’s LED Street Light will achieve approximately 50% energy savings (72 watts to replace conventional 138 watt HPS street lights - 100 watt HPS bulb + 38 watt ballast = 138 watts).

In addition to the proof of concept of its power efficient LED light engine via a street light application, the company has also developed a fully integrated pendant linear SSL luminaire to replace fluorescent lighting and Edison-based LED bulbs at brightness levels equivalent to incandescent bulbs.

Remco's new LED light engine technology and SSL luminaires are gaining attention. The company was selected as one of Canada’s Top Ten Cleantech technology companies in 2007/2008 by the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation.

Remco is on the verge of setting new standards in the Solid State Lighting industry and is currently seeking a strategic alliance with a major global lighting organization to collectively take a commanding lead in high power LED lighting applications.

Laird - Metal core printed circuit board laminate for LED applications

A metal core printed circuit board (MCPCB) laminate for LED applications has been announced by Laird Technologies. The innovative environmentally-friendly new T-lam SS LLDlaminate is designed to keep bright and ultra-bright LED light engines burning brighter, longer and uniformly, says the company.

T-lam SS LLD features a copper circuit layer and aluminium base plate bonded together with the company's T-lam LLD dielectric. T-lam SS LLD laminates are processed through standard circuit board manufacturing and assembly processes.

Circuit boards designed with T-lam SS LLD allow LED light engines to last longer than competitive materials, and provide a uniform thermal path for consistent output of LED light strips. The dielectric's 'unique' microstructure allows the assembly to withstand thousands of thermal cycles due to CTE mismatch.

"The LED BLU for LCD TVs and street light production will more than triple in 2008," said Robert Kranz, global product director. "Laird Technologies has partnered with ITEQ to provide high volume laminate production for these explosive markets."

T-lam SS LLD is ideal for LED lighting applications, specifically LED BLU for TVs and monitors, as well as light engines for street lights, commercial property safety lighting and general lighting applications. Design samples are available now with mass production beginning in February 2008, says the company.

LED bulbs in traffic signals save electricity

Environmentally friendly LED bulbs are being installed in traffic lights at the city's 605 intersections. They won't save commuters time during rush hour, but officials say the upgrade will save the city about $325,000 a year.

"It's going to allow us to save 80 percent on our electric bill," said Patrick Hassett, assistant director of Pittsburgh's Public Works Department. "It's a no-brainer."

Public Works crews began installing LED bulbs during routine maintenance and repairs about five years ago, Hassett said. During that time, they converted about 5,000 bulbs.

In August, City Council awarded CLT Efficient Technologies Group of Carnegie a $2.2 million contract to change the remaining 16,780 bulbs. Crews started making the switch about four weeks ago and have finished about a dozen signals, Hassett said.

Work is expected to be completed by early summer.

Law Enforcement Could Have New LED Light Weapon

Police often use tasers, rubber bullets and pepper spray to control riots and crowds out of control. But there could soon be a new weapon in their arsenal, a high-tech flashlight - with a big punch.

The device called a "LED Incapacitator" causes 'flash blindness' or a nauseated, disoriented feeling.

Dr. Robert Liebermen is president of Intelligent Optical Systems. The California company has an $800,000 contract from the Department of Homeland Security.

The device flashes LED lights at several specific frequencies. Before the brain has time to adjust to one frequency the Incapacitator flashes a different one. Add multiple colors, which the eyes read differently, along with random pulses and a back and forth motion and the brain just can't keep up.

"The longer you look at this [the Incapacitator] ... the more you don't want to look at it," Liebermen said. "The closer you are to it the more intense the effect."

LED lights and fibre optic lights from Lightech Australia

Various lighting products are offered by Lightech Australia under categories like fibre optic lighting, LED lighting and lighting control. The products included in fibre optic lighting are fibre optic fundamentals, fibre optic control, fibre optic cables, fibre optic cable specs and fibre optic light sources.

LED lighting has LED lighting fundamentals, LED control, LED strips and LED fixtures. Products under lighting control are Dynalite and system integration.

Various lighting effects are created by fibre optics which are unmatched by any other lighting technology. The effects and applications of fibre optics are boundless, whether it is subtle or extreme and these are limited only by the expectations and imaginations of people. Fibre optics are energy-efficient, safe and cost-effective.

LEDS are semi-conductor devices by which electronic energy is directly converted in to energy-efficient cold light. As LEDs are electronic devices, these do not require any maintenance and have an inherently long life of about ten thousand hours. LED lighting is available in a wide range of different colours and an entire spectrum of colours can be produced by a combination of red, blue and green, which results in thousands of colours similar to a TV screen.
