A rapid expansion among global LED makers in 1H08 plus a weak demand that is suppressed by a relatively high price premium upon low performance, oversupply was seen, especially when the industry is in lack of a killer application to spur demand. Topic:  Finance Taiwan-based LED packaging company Harvatek estimates its August revenue total will fall a little short of its total in July, but revenues in the third quarter will be better than that it saw in the second quarter, according to market sources. Harvatek's July revenues totaled NT$263.7 million, up 121% from NT$119 million in June, but down 13.64% on year, and its accumulated revenues from January to July were NT$1.7 billion, up 2.98% on year, according to data from the Taiwan Stock Exchange (TSE).

The company suffered from plunging LED product ASPs in the first half of the year, with ASPs declining 30-40% compare to the same period in 2007 due to an industry downturn and a crackdown on China's white-box handset market.

Orders from the the white box handset segment rebounded strongly in July, but has resulted in some inventory that still needs to be digested. Harvatek's August revenues will not reach the level reached in July and should be in the NT$250 million (US$7.9 million) range, the market sources noted.

As the long holiday around China's October 1 National Day is coming up, Harvatek estimates orders will begin picking up again in September. News Source:  Digitimes

Topic:  Industry Taiwan based electric wire and cable maker Walsin Lihwa is going to join the LED market and placed an order for Aixtron AG MOCVD systems in the second quarter this year, with the systems being delivered this quarter. LED industry players indicated that Walsin Lihwa's investment will target both upstream and downstream segments of the LED industry. However, Walsin Lihwa commented that MOCVD systems can be used for various purposes, so the move does not necessary mean it is entering the LED market.

The industry players noted that LCD panel maker HannStar Display is a member of the Walsin Lihwa Group so entering the LED business may make sense if the company is looking to produce LEDs in house for use in backlighting applications for HannStar's medium-size panels. HannStar is working to boost its medium size panel shipments, and estimates of its quarterly shipment may reach five million panels in the second half of the year. LEDs used in HannStar's backlighting applications mainly come from Unity Opto and Everlight's light bar, with less than 10% coming from Japan-based Nichia.

However, the MOCVD system Walsin Lihwa purchased are for producing GaN-based high-power blue LEDs, which are used in general lighting, market sources indicated, while adding that this is a different market than that for low-power LEDs used in LCD panels. Therefore, the Walsin Lihwa purchased MOCVD systems should have nothing to do with supplying HannStar.

Topic:  Industry It’s reported that the market for high-brightness light-emitting diodes (HB-LEDs) in lighting applications grew 64% in 2007 to $337m, up from $205m in 2006. According to related analysis and forecast, the HB-LED lighting market should reach $1.65bn in 2012.

In recent years, HB-LEDs have demonstrated dramatic improvements in performance, as well as significant cost reduction, such that they are undergoing a period of rapid market growth in a variety of niche and general lighting applications.

Topic:  Industry The market for light-emitting diodes is set to grow significantly throughout the year despite an economic downturn, according to Chinese suppliers.

A survey of LED light fixture suppliers carried out by Global Sources revealed that 81 per cent believed that exports would grow at ten per cent or more over the coming year.

Some 67 per cent even predicted expert sales to be even higher, with expectations reaching 20 per cent or more.

The main driver for the export growth was cited as a growing range of LED-based lighting applications.
