Classification of LED Displays

A. LED displays can be classified into two types according to locations applied: indoor LED display and outdoor LED display

1. Indoor LED display

It is mainly used in indoor application. The first step to produce indoor LED display is to make luminous grains into dot-matrix modules (or digital display), then to connect the modules together, forming unit display boards with defined sizes; finally, according to the customers’ requirements, to unite the unit boards into LED display with specific sizes. Indoor LED displays can be divided into the following types according to their pixel sizes: φ3,φ3.75, φ5, φ8,φ10 and so on.

2. Outdoor LED display

It is mainly used in outdoor application. To produce outdoor LED display, the first step is to package luminous grains into unit light-emitting diode, naming single-lamp. The single-lamp used to make outdoor display generally adopts reflective cup that can concentrate light to improve the luminance of the lamp. The second step is to package many LED single-lamps into a pixel tube or pixel module. Then to compose many of them into a dot-matrix unit display cabinet. According to the customers’ requirements and the locations applied, finally, to make required outdoor LED display with specific size from unit display cabinet. The cabinet should be sealed to guard against water and fog, enabling the display to be adaptable in outdoor environment. Outdoor LED display can be divided into the following types according to the density of their pixel: 4094, 2500, 2066, 1600, and 1024 dot.

B. LED display can be classified into three types according to LED’s color: single base color, double base color and full color LED display

1. Single base color

Every pixel of this kind of LED display has only one single color. Most pixels adopt red because its luminescent efficiency is higher, and that will help the display to become brighter. Green as well as mix color which is made up of red, green and yellow can be adopted too.

2. Double base color

In this kind of LED display, every pixel has two base color: red and green. Yellow can be superposed by these two base colors. Under grey scale controlling, 65535 kinds of different grey scale colors can come into being through the composing of red and green with different grey scale.

3. Full color

Also called tricolor. In tricolor LED display, every pixel has red, green and blue three base colors. Under grey scale controlling, through combining these three base colors with various grey scale, all the colors existed in the nature can be formed, including 16,777,216 colors.

C. LED displays can be classified into four types according to their distinct functions: strip display, graph-text display, video display and digital mixed display.

1. Strip display

This kind of display is mainly used to display letters. It can be input through remote controller or connect with computers or work under offline condition. Its name comes from its strip shape.

2. Graph-text display

It is mainly used to display letters as well as graphs with no grey scale control. Usually it is connected with computers, thus enabling information to be input. Compared with strip display, it is advantageous as it can display plenty type of fonts as well as graphs. Meanwhile, graph-text display can be functioned in offline condition and many displays can be controlled together by one computer, enabling it to be advantageous also than video display.

3. Digital mixed display

Digital display is the cheapest display. It is widely used in Stock Exchanges and banks to display stock market information, bank exchange rate, interest rate and all kinds of price list. Strip display is usually added in digital display to show welcoming remarks, announcements and advertisements and so on. This kind of display can also support remote controller input.

4. Video display

Its display elements are one-to-one matched to the pixels of the controlling computers’ monitor. It has 256 levels of grey scale control, thus the expressive force is very abundant. Meanwhile, the display is configured with multi-media card and can play video signals. Other advantages for video display are its open performance, system operation and software without limitation and its real time reflection of the computer monitor.
