Lower Carbon Footprints, Better Light – Philips’ SpeedStar Takes Care of the Night in UK

There are several reasons to explain why LED rises so quickly in recent years. One of them, maybe the most important one, is that LEDs are more energy efficient. LEDs are brighter and cooler than traditional lamps; this also indicates that they consume less energy to emit the same lumen. As the producing process getting improved, the costs to produce LEDs are lower, and this fact encourage people to consider using LEDs instead. In addition, LEDs are more flexible for different situations. Designers can achieve almost everything they want.

Other than advantages of energy and flexibility, brightness is another beneficial feature of LED fixtures. Now, European countries are striving to cut as many costs as possible, and the United Kingdom is not an exception. When Wigan Council was planning to start their Street Scene and Lighting project, it was necessary to find a balance between brightness and money. The manager, Keith Benson, sought help from Philips and there was a perfect solution: Philips’ product called “SpeedStar LED luminaire.”

SpeedStar is a LED luminaire that has a long lifetime so the authority doesn’t have to pay lots of attention to maintaining lighting system on streets and they can also save money. Other than that, SpeedStar is bright enough that it also provides a safer condition for people who walk around the streets in the night. All these advantages are contributing to another area in UK, too: Tamworth, an old city that about 75,000 residents live in. The A5 highway runs across the central strip from east to west, and the UK Highways Agency adopted Philips’ suggestion of using SpeedStar as their new lighting fixtures installed along the A5 Tamworth Bypass.

This bypass is always busy, so it is extremely important to ensure drivers’ safety. Therefore, SpeedStar, a luminaire that can transmit consistent high quality, brightness and intensity, is once again introduced to the manager who takes care of this lighting project. Being lightened by SpeedStar’s high quality whitelight, accidents have been eliminated efficiently.

This is why LED is promising in the future. On one hand, it helps users save money while cause lower carbon footprints; on the other hand, LED luminaires are so flexible that they can almost reach all kinds of requirement. Through these two example we introduce in this article, we can easily see that there are still lots of possibilities for LEDs.
