Philips awarded by U.S. Department of Energy for exceptional progress in LED PAR lamp development

Philips Color Kinetics has been awarded for “Significant Achievement in Solid-State Lighting Research & Development” by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which is recognition of its exceptional progress in the development of the highly efficient LED PAR lamp.

The Philips LED PAR lamp is targeted to achieve approximately 70 lumens of light per watt, which will surpass the efficacy of almost all the conventional light sources existing in the market.  The full developed product is expected to be available later this year. And the tested efficiency for the LED PAR lamp under current development stage has already been substantially higher than the LED PAR 38 lamps on the market.

PAR 38 lamps are commonly used in commercial interiors such as retail shops, offices, hotels and other spaces. The incandescent, halogen or High Intensity Discharge (HID) technologies are adopted PAR 38 lamps, while none of these can be compared to the energy efficiency and long source life of LEDs. And the Philips LED PAR lamp is being developed to replace the PAR 38 lamps in its application in commercial places.

The development of the LED PAR lamp is funded by a $1.7 million grant from the DOE. All the technology requirements are to be realized in this project, including advanced LED package, system integration technology, highly efficient driver technology and a unique optical arrangement to ensure the ultimate product to be truly available for general use.
