Vestal’s first proposed law of 2010 limits on LED signs

In Vestal, a part of New York's the Greater Binghamton area, the 2009 town board discussed the issue at length, creating a law that would put strict regulations on the use of LED signs.

A public hearing on the proposed law will take place at the regularly scheduled town board meeting.Several area businesses have requested a variance to use LED signs. Only one -- Horizons Federal Credit Union at Campus Plaza -- has one.

Tyrell Auto Sales, 2102 Vestal Parkway W., has requested authorization to install an electronic sign.

Currently, town ordinance does allow signs to flash or blink.

The proposed legislation would allow LED signs with the following restrictions:

  • Only a single shade of amber will be allowed on displays.
  • The minimum length of time a single message must be displayed is 10 minutes.
  • At properties other than plazas, only one LED sign is permitted.
  • At plazas, LED signs are permitted by special permit issued by the town board.
  • LED signs are allowed only in commercial districts.
  • The sign cannot be greater than 40 square feet and not greater than 10 feet in length, width or height.
