Cooper Lighting Announces 2012 Class Schedule for the SOURCE Educational Facility

Cooper Lighting, a division of Cooper Industries plc (NYSE: CBE), has announced the 2012 SOURCE calendar of educational classes for the lighting and design community. The SOURCE, the industries’ leading lighting education facility, is located at Cooper Lighting’s headquarters in Peachtree City, Georgia, and offers a wide variety of seminars designed to broaden the understanding of lighting and its applications. The SOURCE has been servicing the lighting industry for over twenty years and to date, over 100,000 lighting and interior designers, architects, utilities personnel, facility managers, retail planners, electrical contractors, energy-saving companies, engineers, distributors, builders, landscape architects, university students and end-users have benefited from the SOURCE experience.

Members of many professional organizations are required to earn some form of continuing education units, or credits, to demonstrate currency of knowledge and skills and to maintain their professional standing. The SOURCE supports this nationally recognized measurement of accomplishment by providing seminars and workshops that are pre-certified educational opportunities to obtain such recognition.

This year, the SOURCE has added a fundamentals class for lighting educators and will be hosting a healthcare seminar in Boston, Massachusetts and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada as noted below.

This three-day workshop focuses on the fundamentals of lighting. A unique approach to training allows participants to actively participate and apply skills learned during the sessions. The Lighting Fundamentals seminar is ideal for either newcomers to the field of lighting or those interested in a refresher course. This introductory level class will cover lighting terminology, photometry, LEDs, fixture types, lamp-ballast systems, energy and lighting legislation and an introductory to lighting controls.

This two-day class focuses on the latest energy-saving products in lighting and controls for industrial, commercial, manufacturing, warehouses and exterior environments. Participants will gain an understanding of lighting legislation, current lamp and ballast technologies as well as LED solutions. A class emphasis is on specific requirements and exceptions in LEED, ASHRAE 90.1, IECC and EPACT.

Healthcare Lighting Solutions Workshop

Healthcare Lighting Solutions is a two-day interactive workshop that addresses the specific lighting needs of patients, guests and employees in the healthcare environment. Participants will learn about the psychology of light, visual lighting cues and lighting for various healthcare applications. There will be discussion of healthcare and current lighting research, lighting for circadian benefits, vision, color and lighting for special populations and how this information can be incorporated into the design of a facility.

LED Exterior Lighting Solutions

Participants will study exterior lighting design basics and principles for area, roadway and floodlighting applications. The course will examine the current lamp technologies including the latest in LED lighting systems and testing methodologies such as LM79 and LM80. Participants will evaluate the operating characteristics of fixtures designed for exterior use and discuss applicable lighting legislation and energy concerns. Ideal for those involved in design/specification or the installation of fixtures for exterior applications.

Lighting and Controls for the Facility Manager
April 12 – 13

The goal of this program is to develop a strong understanding of how to utilize technology to develop a sound plan for energy savings, reduced maintenance and automated control of lighting systems for large facilities. A full understanding of new technologies such as LED lighting and daylight harvesting will be addressed for implementation in both retrofit and new construction. Utilizing case studies and participant input, the SOURCE team will demonstrate various applications of both interior and exterior site lighting.

Fundamentals for Teachers of Lighting
June 6 – 8

Whether a professional or novice to lighting education, this seminar will update a participant’s lighting knowledge. The three-day workshop, intended for those that teach lighting, will cover all types of lamp technologies, color temperature and color rendering. The training will allow participants to actively participate and discuss trends and technologies that are currently happening in the lighting marketplace. This introductory level class will cover lighting terminology, photometry, LEDs, fixture types, lamp-ballast systems, energy and lighting legislation and an introduction to lighting controls.

CEUs: Up to 7 hours of IDCEC registered CEUs and 6 hours of AIA LEUs. Tuition is waiver for faculty teaching design, architecture or engineering with a lighting component.
Prerequisites: No prior experience in lighting is required.

Residential Lighting Solutions Workshop
August 23 - 24

This two-day introduction to residential lighting design will be explored from a lighting designer’s perspective. Learn to apply design techniques that use today’s technologies. Participants will study lamps and LEDs and their operating characteristics, luminaires in applications, and an introduction to control systems. The class project allows participants to analyze a variety of lighting techniques in both theory and practice. LEED, ENERY STAR® and legislation for residential design will be reviewed. It’s a great class to help prepare for the CLC certification exam.

An evening workshop allows participants to analyze a variety of lighting designs and applications in both theory and practice.
