Will sapphire substrates be found on iPhone 7? Latest market rumors from Chinese media have pointed to the possible appearance of sapphire material on the new iPhone 7, which will be mostly supplied by Foxconn, according to a China Times report.

Foxconn is rumored to invest NT $17.50 billion (US $560 million) in establishing a smartphone panel factory for the sapphire screened iPhone 7.

A Wall Street Journal report pointed out earlier Foxconn has been in talks with Zhengzhou, Henan Province, China to establish a smartphone screen processing plant. Foreign investments up to RMB 35 billion (US $5.69 billion) have poured into the new plant, which will mainly be manufacturing small to mid-sized panels. The market is viewing this as the newest monopoly since Apple’s panel supply chain was monopolized by Sharp, Japan Display and LGD.

Latest rumors claim Foxconn’s new plant will not be making tempered glass panels but sapphire glass panels.
