The U.S. city of Detroit has completed retrofitting 14,000 LED streetlights in three zip codes, according to a report by MLive.

The city was named one of five cities across U.S. that received White House funding for streetlight upgrades under High Performance Outdoor Lighting Accelerator project.

The city has completed installation of new streetlights in three zip codes, and met a July 31 deadline for two pilot project areas.

The city’s Public Light Authority said it is charged with installing a total of 65,000 new lights over a period of two years.

(Editor's Note: We apologize for the misleading information in the original headline. The article has been amended on Aug. 6, 2014 to correctly reflect the number of streetlights retrofitted with LEDs in Detroit is currently 14,000 and not the 140,000 as previously stated.)
