City of Rochester’s LED Street Light Program

Reportedly, Rochester public utilities  has made a plan to expand its LED street light program to including another 400 plus city lights.

This is one of three neighborhoods in Rochester where RPU has tested the new LED street lights. These LED's have been up for three to four months. And almost all the residents we talked to appreciate the change.

RPU says not only do they look much different than typical street lights, the light itself is different.

According to RPU's Tony Benson , "a little whiter light. Lot of people say it's a cleaner light. Some of the other technologies have more of an orange or yellowish light and the cleaner, whiter light people seem to like."

RPU is trying to get rid of the mercury vapor bulb and this diode is similar to the fixture it's replacing it with. This bulb cost roughly $25. RPU's replacement costs roughly $325. But this little light here uses roughly 1/7 the energy of the big bulb. And the little one will last about 35 years.
