Indian State Karnataka to Launch LED Bulbs Scheme Next Month

News Source:

The capital of Indian State Karnataka will initiate its LED bulb scheme from Dec. 11, 2015, according to a report from The Times of India.

The project to be launched in Mysore will replace 60 million traditional bulbs with LED bulbs to conserve energy, said energy minister D K Shivakumar. The state has procured 1.2 million LED bulbs from Indian IT company Wipro during the initial phase, he added.

According to market sources, the government is relying on three to four suppliers to provide the 6 million LED bulbs to be issued to average households.

The government will be giving away a maximum of 10 LED bulbs, each with 9W maximum energy to each household, said Shivakumar. The bulbs issued under the Domestic Efficient Lighting Program (DELP) scheme with the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) comes with three year warranty.

Indian consumers can choose two payment methods, either by paying initial payment of INR 100 (US $1.51) per bulb upfront, or pay a minimum of INR 10 and utilize EMI scheme of INR 10 added to the monthly electricity bill. The Indian government plans to subsidize close to INR 300 per bulb by utilizing the Central government sponsored DELP.
