Hot Picks of the Week Oct.17-21

Highlights this week:

Micro-LEDs, why do we love you so much, when commercialization will take another five to ten years? Despite the long incubation period ahead before micro-LED screens can reach mass production stage, Facebook’s VR subsidiary Oculus announced it absorbed Irish micro-LED company InfiniLED. The strategy seems eerily familiar with the one launched by Apple years back in 2013, when it took Luxvue under its wing, so Oculus and its parent company Facebook are potentially eyeing micro-LEDs for its next generation VR headsets.

Both Cree and Philips Lighting announced their revenue performance for third quarter of 2016, and both reported quite contrasting results. Cree’s revenue climbed up 17%, while Philips slid down 16%.

Top German lighting manufacturer’s Osram’s potential sale has been met with resistance by the German Economy Ministry, which is considering whether it should protect key high-tech companies from Chinese takeovers. So emerges a new report that Osram might remain a German company if Continental wins in its bid, but the offered price will be lower than that offered by San’an Opto, about EUR 20 per share short compared to Chinese company’s generous EUR 70 per share.
