NYSERDA and OLEDWorks to Study OLED Lighting for Healthcare Industry

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and OLEDWorks LLC announced today that OLEDWorks is developing a new lighting prototype with support from NYSERDA that would save energy and not disrupt sleep patterns for patients in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. OLEDWorks will collaborate with Highland Hospital at the University of Rochester Medical Center, which has formed a team of doctors and nurses to provide feedback on the innovative white and amber OLED lighting system.

This project advances Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy to build a clean, resilient and affordable energy system for all New Yorkers by accelerating the pace of energy innovation. OLED lights provide low glare, are energy efficient, and produce little to no heat. They are five times more efficient than incandescent bulbs, meet or exceed the efficiency of fluorescent bulbs and are competitive with non-organic LED bulbs in certain applications.

OLEDWorks is using research and development funding of $100,645 from NYSERDA to develop the white and amber OLED prototype and then quantify the benefits of the lighting with Highland Hospital.

John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, NYSERDA said, "This project is an example of the State's investment in promising new product development under Governor Cuomo. As a catalyst in the clean energy marketplace, NYSERDA helps innovators like OLEDWorks build businesses that deliver needed products and services, and build a vibrant cleantech community in the State."

Today's announcement complements "Finger Lakes Forward," a comprehensive blueprint to generate economic growth by building upon the region's recent progress and investing in key industries, including photonics, agriculture and food production, and advanced manufacturing. An historic $500 million State investment in the Finger Lakes region through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative, announced by Governor Cuomo in December 2015, is leveraging more than $2.5 billion in private investment, creating thousands of jobs and providing the basis to create a highly successful and diverse 21st century economy. An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) light bulb is composed of thin organic layers sandwiched between two electrodes. When electrical current is applied, charge carriers are injected into the organic layers, which emit visible light.

Amber OLEDs are free of blue wavelengths found in regular LEDs that are known to disrupt sleep patterns. The new lighting technology is beneficial to hospitals because the amber lighting will not wake patients, allowing for better sleep. The new lighting technology supports New York State's energy efficiency goal of reducing energy consumption in buildings by 23 percent.

Giana Phelan, Director of Business Development for OLEDWorks said, "The superb light quality of OLED can enhance the lighting experience in a wide range of medical applications. OLEDWorks is privileged to work with the excellent team at Highland Hospital to identify and test where OLED lighting can be most impactful."

Mike Zanghi, Director of Facilities for Highland Hospital said, "Highland Hospital is pleased to work with OLEDWorks on this important project to find cost-effective and clinically effective lighting solutions for patient care areas. Lighting is one of the biggest electricity users in a hospital - reducing cost and improving the patient experience is a win-win."

OLEDWorks has received five grants to help improve performance and reduce the high costs of OLED lighting manufacturing, which will provide affordable, high-quality products to help grow the emerging OLED market. In total, OLEDWorks received $1.68 million from NYSERDA and $3 million from the Department of Energy over the past three years.OLEDWorks is a leader in the development and production of affordable and innovative organic light-emitting diode lighting solutions. OLEDWorks is the only U.S.-based OLED light engine and panel manufacturer.
