Indian State Tamil Nadu to Roll out LED Streetlight Upgrade

Tami Nadu will be implementing a state-wide streetlight upgrade in all municipalities, said Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday.

According to the report, the streetlight upgrade will be implemented in 10 corporations, 19 municipalities, and 18 wards in Thanjavur municipality to swap the sodium vapor lamps with LED bulbs, reported The Times of India.

The streetlight project to be rolled out in Dindigul corporation and other municipalities will cost INR 3.2 billion (US $) under a joint venture scheme, and is expected to slash energy costs by 35%, said Jayalalithaa.

The state is home to about 1.65 million incandescent bulb streetlights, where currently about half of these 824,000 bulbs will be replaced with LEDs at a cost of INR 3 billion, she said.

"There are around 16.46 lakh streetlights with incandescent bulbs and at present 8.24 lakh bulbs are being replaced. This year, the remaining 8.22 lakh bulbs will be replaced with LED bulbs at a cost of Rs 300 crore," said the chief minister.
