Greek Designer Conjures Colorful Luminaire that Mimics Rainbows

Greek designer Eugenia Antoniou has created a unique LED luminaire that emits circular patterned colors resembling the eclipse of a rainbow. The Product and System Design Engineering graduate from the University of Aegean has coined the impressive luminaire “Eclipse of Rainbow.”

According to Antoniou the product was inspired by rainbows seen in Nature, and the main idea behind the design was to make a unique object employing the qualities of light to encompass elements of playfulness and aestheticism.

To achieve the desired effect, a disc was inserted between the light source and the level of projection to recreate the eclipse phenomemnon of when a celestial body is interposed between another and the observer.

The object is based on the principle of contrasts between light and shadows, black and white. The colorful rings are elaborate shading by a subtractive, black and white design approach that resulted in the unexpected outcome.

The light is rendered by light sources, where seven LED bulbs placed in a particular angle and a compact disc are placed so two optical effects would be extracted: a colorful pattern on the floor and white light composition on the compact disc level.

The luminaire received an honorable mention at the Red Dot award 2015, and also clinched first prize in Design Concept at Ideas Design Competition indoor/outdoor LED Luminaire 2014.
