Hot Picks of the Week Dec.12-16

Towards the end of 2016, more mergers and acquisition talks have been concluded. CFIUS opposition against Go Scale Capital acquiring Lumileds for US $3.3 billion earlier in January resulted in the wipe out of US $1.3 billion in company value for the LED chip and component maker. Lumileds parent company Philips Lighting sold the independent legal entity for US $2 billion to Apollo Global Management.

OLED and micro-LEDs both shone bright on the industry radar this year, as leading tech giants restructure their business strategies and redirect resources to these areas. In the OLED technology sector, Sony announced this week it will be launching two OLED TV models in 2017 at prices starting from US $2,999. The TVs will rely on LG Display’s OLED panels. The Korean electronic giant that has been a major supplier of large-sized OLED panels is undergoing a major restructure to focus on OLED technology. Meanwhile, Japan Display is trying to inch its way into the OLED panel sector to meet client demands. News this week pointed it might be in talks of acquiring JOLED, a joint venture established between Sony and Panasonic.

Turning to micro-LED technologies, LEDinside recently spoke to Rohinni and VerLASE about their developments. Rohinni is a startup that is bringing micro-LED technology to industrial designers so they can add distinguishing features initially to keyboard backlight. Other fields the manufacturer is considering to test the waters include automotive lighting, smartphones, and others.

VerLASE on the other hand is a specialist in color converting technology using quantum well based technology, using similar materials as quantum dots the company is eying the near-eye display market for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) devices.
