Reportedly, Luminus Devices’ CBM-380-RGBW product used inside VARI*LITE VLX Wash Luminaires are in the process of lighting the stage for NBC’s hit television program ‘America’s Got Talent.’   This system delivers a total light output of 14,000 white lumens with an LED lifetime of over 10,000 hours at maximum output.

In a bid to reduce energy, maintenance costs, as well as improve lighting quality, the city of Virginia Beach, Virginia has selected Cooper Lighting for the interior and exterior LED lighting upgrades to its Virginia Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau. On the exterior, Cooper Lighting McGraw-Edison Concise LED Canopy fixtures, Talon LED Area Luminaires, and Lumark LED Wal-Pak fixtures will illuminate the building and parking lot.

This past weekend, Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) and Habitat for Humanity of Durham celebrated the completion of the world’s first Habitat for Humanity house lit entirely with LED fixtures and bulbs. Durham-based LED manufacturer Cree sponsored the construction of the Habitat house and Cree employees assisted as volunteers on the project. The house includes Cree’s award-winning CR6™ LED downlight, as well as other LED products featuring Cree LEDs from MSi and TESS (Top Energy Saving System Corp.).

Recently, SemiLEDs Corporation (NASDAQ: LEDS) was listed for transactions on the NASDAQ Global Select Market, with the symbol “LEDS.” The company’s IPO (initial public offering) was priced $17.00 per share with 5,250,000 shares. With the strong demand, Royal Philips Electronics expected LED lighting revenues to reach 15% of its total lighting revenues for 2010 and over 20% in 4Q10. And in 2015, the company aimed to reach 50% of its total lighting revenues.

Some Taiwan LED companies strengthened their development on the LED lighting segment, as LED lighting market was expected to increase about 50% in 2011 by industry sources. Epistar estimated that the ratio of LED lighting products to its total production would grow up to 30% in 2011 from 20% in 2010, while Tekcore and Formosa Epitaxy both were expected to add ratios to 30% in 4Q10.

Chinese venture capital firm ,WI Harper Group, announced that SemiLEDs made its 5.3 million shares of initial public offering on the Nasdaq Global Market exchange with the ticker symbol of LEDS. AIXTRON AG has announced a new order for a Black Magic Plasma Enhanced CVD (PECVD) system from Graphenea SL, a start-up company based within the facilities of nanoGUNE in San Sebastian city, in the Basque region of Spain.  Graphenea’s focus is in developing graphene-based process technology for electronic devices.

A leader of Chimei noted, the total LCD TVs’ sales would be 1.18 million units in Taiwan in 2010, and it’s expected to over 1.25 million in 2011, with LED TVs having a 30-35% share. Chimei was expected to ship 175,000 LCD TVs in the Taiwan market in 2010, up 16% from 2009 .In 2011, the company planed to ship 200,000 units, with LED backlight models accounting for over 40% of total shipments and aiming to account for 20% share in the Taiwan market.

Taiwan-based Global Brands Manufacture (GBM) would set up a production base for the manufacture of PCB and PCB assembly (PCBA) locally, and recently it had signed an investment MOU with the government of Chongqing City, western China. GBM focused on the motherboard, notebook and HDD markets, and extended its market reach to automotive and LED lighting products.

SEMI noted that fab spending would increase about 18.3% in 2011 and about 9.5% in 2012, with the ongoing technology upgrades and continued capacity growth, especially in LED segment. In 2011, the spending on construction projects would decrease about 11% and in 2012 it would become much less due to a currently uncertain outlook for new fab construction starts. But it estimated that spending on fab equipment would rise 23% to about US$40 billion in 2011.

LCD monitor vendors noted that LED-backlit monitor sales had improved in the second half of 2010, with the price gap between LED and CCFL models narrowed and more LED sets were available. It’s estimated that in 4Q LED-backlit models’ sales would account for 50% of the total monitor sales in Taiwan.

LED chipmaker Epistar November revenues decreased to NT$1.663 billion (US$55.161 million), down 2.8% sequentially but up 26.4% from 2009. Revenues from January through November grew 60.16% on year to NT$18.327 million.
