Toshiba, Intersil, and Linear announce new LED driver ICs respectively

Toshiba America Electronic Components (TAEC) published four new 16-channel driver ICs for LED-backlit applications ranging from notebook PCs to large TVs. The TC62D722 targeted high-end displays in TVs and offered a 16-bit pulse-width-modulation (PWM) mode that reduced display flicker in features specific to the application. And the new TC62D776 targeted applications in idle-mode power consumption such as battery powered devices.

Momentive Cooperates with Lee&Lee to Develop LED Lens for Flat-panel, LCD TVs

Momentive Performance Materials has developed a partnership with Lee&Lee Hi-Tech Co., a manufacturer specializing in liquid silicone rubber (LSR) injection molding, to utilize Momentive’s Silopren* LSR 7000 Series to designed LED lens parts for flat-panel, LCD TVs. LSR 7000 is a family of highly LSRs, which is capable of achieving highly complex optical components that surpass those made with traditional thermoplastic materials or glass.

Together Universal Display with Acuity Brands develops OLEDs.

Working with a $2 million US Department of Energy (DOE) Phase III Xlerator grant, Acuity cooperated with Universal Display to design and fabricate OLED lighting fixtures, which was an energy-efficient and color-tunable phosphorescent OLED lighting system. The two partners said that the system would build on the Universal’s OLED technology and Acuity’s experience designing and building solid-state-lighting (SSL) fixtures.

Rensselaer Smart Lighting Research Center Takes a Test Bed for first LED Bulbs on Its Campus

The new Smart Lighting Engineering Research Center (ERC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) of Troy, NY, USA has arranged a test bed for first LED bulbs on a key building of RPI’s campus.   Led by director Robert Karlicek, the Smart Lighting ERC worked with campus officials to replace some of the conventional incandescent bulbs in overhead lights with LED bulbs in the nine-story George M. Low Center for Industrial Innovation (CII).

Epistar continues to expand LED-backlit TV market penetration

Recently, a leader of Epistar noted, LED-backlit TV market penetration would reach 40% in 2011 from 20% in 2010, and Epistar planed to ramp up capacity by 30% in 2011 after already raising its capacity by 30-40% in 2010. WPG and Wahlee is expected to ramp up green energy sales capacity

WPG was expected its revenues would reach NT$10 billion (US$328.08 million) from sales of silicon wafers and LED products at least. The company planed to sell LED lighting products for Osram and Cree. Similarly, Wahlee Industrial’s solar-grade polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) wafers was expected to contribute NT$900 million to NT$1 billion to the company's total revenues in 2010, and the amount is likely to double in 2011.

Dow Electronic Materials Sets up Korea-based Plant to Produce TMG for LED Market

Dow Electronic Materials, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company has begun to set up a new metalorganic precursor manufacturing plant in Cheonan, Korea, as a part of a multi-phase plan announced in June 2010 to expand TrimethylGallium (TMG) production capacity to meet the surging global demand for the material in the LED and related electronics markets. It is expected to be operational in early 2011.And benefiting from the multi-phase plan, total additional capacity is expected to be 60 metric tons per year.

Amtran 3Q revenue reached NT$15.27 billion, up 6% quarter-over-quarter

LCD TV maker Amtran Technology posted 3Q revenue of NT$15.27 billion, up 6% quarter-over-quarter and 5% year-over-year, with EPS of NT$0.63. Operating profit stood at NT$0.438 billion, with the operating margin of 2.87%. Net profit stood at NT$0.49 billion, with EPS of NT$0.63. Gross profit arrived at NT$2.049 billion, with the gross margin of 13.42%. In the first three quarters, accumulated revenues totaled NT$42.863 billion, and net profit reached NT$1.356 billion, with EPS of NT$1.77.

AUO Reports 3Q10 Financial Results

AU Optronics Corp. (2409) recently announced its unaudited results for 3Q10. The company posted consolidated revenue of NT$124,403 million (about US$3,989 million), down 3.3% from 2Q. Gross profit stood at NT$6,241 million (about US$200 million), with the gross margin of 5.0%. Operating profit arrived at NT$232 million (about US$7 million), with the operating margin of 0.2%. AUO's net income for 3Q came in at NT$227 million (approximately US$7 million) after tax.
