Historical city center lighting masterplan

Rietberg
Rietberg

The Rietberg historical city center lighting plan is a perfect example of total masterplanning of a middle-sized city where all levels of citizens were highly involved in the creation process, improving people’s life. Special care of lighting solutions for disabled people and for children have been incorporated. The used lighting accents fits the materials used in the typical style of architecture. The area of the LED lighting concept embraces the entire historic town center, as delimited by the Ems River and the course of the so-called diversion channel. This green ring is also the natural boundary of the historic nucleus of the origin of Rietberg.

Furthermore Rietberg replaced the lighting by very sustainable and energy-efficient LED luminaires connected to CityTouch intelligent digital remote and asset lighting management system. The project had a very broad set-up and was worked out in the smallest detail. Rietberg proves that masterplanning also fits in smaller and medium sized cities and not only suits the bigger cities. “The professional organization of lighting for buildings, main shopping streets and green spaces are significantly upgraded Rydberg’s image, coherency and atmosphere; it also encourages tourism and promotes the local economy” said Mr. Zhang Wen, Business Segment Marketing of Philips Outdoor Greater China region.

The lighting design was realized by Jochen Meyer-Brandis, lighting designer/urban planner of SMB Aachen.

The winning project from Rietberg and all the entries for this year’s awards reinforce the role that light can play in creating vibrant, attractive cities that encourage the participation of its citizens and visitors. The result changes the character of the city and turning it into a safer, comfortable and inviting city center‘’ said city.people.light award jury president Rafael Gallego, commenting on the winning entry.
