Skiing LED Style

A stunning video shot by Sweetgrass productions sponsored by Philips has transformed the snowy Alaskan mountain slopes in U.S. and snowy hills of British Columbia, Canada into a dreamily illuminating landscape, according to a Wired report.

Professional skiers Pep Fujas and Eric Hjorleifson geared up in especially designed LED suits that were lined with 7,000 LED bulbs, the bulbs occasionally burned out and required repairs. The skiers faced the daunting task of maneuvering the steep snow slopes in the dark, while adjusting their eyes to the suits bright lights, which was blinding when reflected off snow dust. “A couple times the skiers were like, ‘Holy shit, that was scary,’” said the film’s co-director Nick Waggoner.

Logistics was also challenging in shooting the 12 minute film, since it involved hauling eight 4,000 watt lights up the snowy slopes to the film set. Although, most of the 9,000 pound gear was transported by helicopters, some filming locations were unreachable by helicopter and required filming staff to manually carry the equipment.

A lot of effort was put into hauling the lighting equipment to the slopes to create lighting effects similar to this one.

The aim of the film is to transform the ski filming genre, said Waggoner. The team’s hardwork seems it has paid off in the final film.
