LG Set to Launch QLED TV and OLED Plane Windows in 2017

LG Electronics announced it will be launching a quantum dot TV, along with its lineup of OLED TVs by 2017, reported The Korean Herald.

Competition in the OLED TV sector is projected to intensify starting from next year, as 10 electronic companies all plan to focus on the next-generation display technology in premium display sector.

Kwon Bong-suk, executive vice president and CEO of LG Home Entertainment Company, said that LG will continue to head the OLED alliance and launch new innovative TV sets next year.

“We will unveil a new OLED TV with an exclusive hardware platform, that only LG could produce, at the CES trade show in January next year,” he said at a press conference at IFA trade show.

“It could be a flat TV or a flexible TV,” he said. Rollable OLED TVs might be nowhere in sight next year, but is a part of technical advantage stages in OLED displays.

In a move to counter rival Samsung’s expansion in the quantum dot TV in premium TV sector, LG will unveil a matching new TV lineup. The company will position the QD TVs in a market sector slightly lower than OLED TVs.

“OLED TVs target the top 2% of customers in the market, where around 200 million sets are sold per year,” he said. “By introducing quantum dot TVs evolved from LCD TV technology next year, we will satisfy customers with various needs.”

In addition, LG is in talks with aircraft makers to develop OLED inflight displays and windows.

“We are currently discussing ways to utilize OLED not only for inflight displays but also for windows with aircraft manufacturers,” he said.

Higher safety standards will make inflight OLED display adaption in aircrafts more challenging, and the company is still discussing the time table for utilizing OLED displays inflight, he added.
