GE LED Lights Up Baguio City in the Philippines

Baguio City is the summer capital of The Philippines and an established tourist destination and education hub. Faced with an increase in migration and a high influx of tourists in recent years, city officials embarked on a committed move to revitalize the city through a Clean & Green Environment program. Utilizing energy-efficient roadway lighting is one of the core initiatives, leading to the introduction of energy-efficient LEDs at its streets in an extensive collaboration with GE Lighting.

As part of Baguio City’s new lighting program, GE LED park lights have been implemented at the Burnham Park and Chinese Garden to-date. More recently, 20 sets of GE’s LED R150 Pro are installed along an estimated 3-km section of Kennon Road. The LED R150 Pro provide a 37 percent reduction in energy usage compared to GE traditional light sources, while saving the city an estimated US$212,400 per annum in terms of energy and maintenance costs. Kennon Road is one of three major arterial thoroughfares in Baguio City, serving many key facilities, educational institutions and tourists attractions.

LED streets and park lights are making an important contribution to Baguio City’s sustainability efforts. It curbs costs while allowing the streets and public gardens to be lit with an aesthetically pleasing light source. The quality illumination provided by GE’s LED solution will enhance the overall ambience and safety for the city’s residents and tourists.

“GE’s involvement in providing efficient roadway lighting in The Philippines dates to the 1940s when the first electric street lights were installed along Real Street in Manila. GE recognizes the importance of a sound and thriving environment as a major element in promoting tourism. This initiative with the local government of Baguio is one of the many lighting projects in the country that GE participates in. It is geared towards creating better, safer and cleaner communities through products that are ecologically sensitive and at the same time, cost-effective,” says GE Lighting Country Manager Vince Adorable.

Introducing Quality Light to City Streetscape

For the Kennon Road project, GE has specified its LED R150 Pro (157W) light. This luminaire is ideal for street and compound illumination as it directs the light to where it is needed while reducing the glare from the fitting to less than 5 percent. There is no wasted upward light leakage. In addition, the white LED light makes for a more modern and vibrant atmosphere in the night space.

Kennon Road’s LED Benefits

Baguio City’s extensive utilization of LED street lights means a significant change in energy consumption for the city. The LED lights employed along a 3-km stretch of Kennon Road will bring about a significant reduction in energy usage, and estimated savings of US$212,400 per annum in energy and maintenance costs. Environmentally, the impact is equivalent to eliminating about 398,000 kg of CO2 emissions per year or creating 109 acres of new trees.
