LED Light Display Breathes Life Back Into Small Finnish Town

A small area right outside the capital city of Finland had new life breathed into it when design team Lighting Design Collective decided to take a seaside oil silo and convert it into a permanent art piece.

Helsinki World Design Capital 2012 gave Lighting Design Collective an official project to turn an old oil silo in largely uninhabited Kruunuvuorenranta into a permanent light display.

The inside of the silo is painted a deep red, with areas to sit places along the walls.

The team drilled holes throughout the 36m wide 17m tall silo, attaching 1250 white LED lights to the outside. The design provides people with two completely different displays from day to night. During the day, light streams in through the holes, casting shadows along the inside of the silo. Once the sun sets, computerized LEDs lights turn on simulating flocks of birds and changing patterns triggered by wind that frequent the area. The lights stay on until 2:30am when the last ferry departs for Helsinki.
