Dubai Traffic Lights Go Green

Dubai’s The Roads and Trasport Authority (RTA) has started to replace halogen traffic lights in the emirate with LEDs, according to a Gulfnews.com report.

The project is part of RTA’s environmental efforts, and will be carried out in several phases. Implementation of phase one of the project is underway.

The energy efficient bulbs will help RTA save annually Dh900,000 (US $245,031.32), and “optimize consumption by as much as 55 percent,”said Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of the RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency.

The low-maintenance LED bulbs used in the project are expected to have a lifetime of about 10 years, and come with auto-dimming features according to the degree of external lighting, Maitha added. This particular feature will add an additional road safety protection measurement, as it can minimize impact of sunlight reflections on traffic light lenses, which can keep the lights visible during daytime.
