Samsung Display to Invest in OLED Production Line

News Source:

It seems Samsung Display has not quite given up on OLED TVs yet, and has no intention of letting rival compatriot LG Display become a monopoly in this sector, according to a recent Reuters report.

Samsung Display plans to inject 4 trillion won ($3.6 billion) in expanding OLED production capacity, as parent company Samsung struggles with smartphone sales.

The investment for a new production line for medium and small-sized OLED displays for consumer electronic devices including smartphones will take place from 2015 to 2017, the report cited a Samsung Display spokesman saying.

Easing growth in the smartphone business indicates Samsung Electronics will need to rely on component sales to generate earnings growth this year, said analysts and investors.

Apple is catching up and might surpass Samsung as the world’s top smartphone maker in fourth quarter, according to recent data compiled.
