Dubai Utility Company to Convert Streetlights with LEDs in 500 Villas

Traditional light bulbs in three areas in Dubai will be replaced with LED lights, the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) stated recently.

The project is DEWA’s first joint venture with Mohammed bin Rashid Housing Establishment (MBRHE), in collaboration with Etihad Energy Service Company (ESCO).

DEWA will send six teams to replace traditional lights in 500 villas located in Al Barsha, Al Warqa and Oud Metha.

During the first phase of the joint project with MBRHE, Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA has asked villa owners to cooperate so they can reach their energy reduction target to achieve sustainable future.

Partnership between DEWA and MBRHE dates back to 2015, after the two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2015. Dewa aims to supply 2,000 new and existing homes from MBRHE with 160,000 LED bulbs and PV panels.

"We are glad to cooperate with MBRHE in this project, as it reflects the level of cooperation between different government entities in the emirate,” said Al Tayer. “This supports the vision of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050."

The installation of the LED bulbs will significantly cut energy consumption, and supports the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to slash energy consumption by 30% by 2030.

"Dewa works to increase the uptake of renewable energy thus limiting the use of conventional resources and encouraging sustainability," said Waleed Salman, executive vice-president of strategy & business development at Dewa.
