Light+Building 2012 Report VII: LED City Lighting

LEDinside visited Hall 5 at Light+Building 2012, which was for city lighting applications including street lamp and other public lighting fixtures. 90% of the products showcased in there adopted LEDs. Most companies focused on module and wireless control.

Following its acquisition of Ruud Lighting in 2011, major LED company CREE has been proactively making inroads into the LED lighting market. The company exhibited its outdoor lighting fixtures at Light+Building 2012, including two new LED street lamps with emphasis on the modularized design.

This LED street lamp, named Aeroblades, was designed by Britain maker Speirs+Major. The company shaped the light like a blade to modularize it. Each blade has 20 LEDs. Due to the separated positioning, each blade gets adequate thermal dissipation. The user can choose to use 2, 4 or 6 blades to compose the LED light.

Another new LED street lamp showcased was called LEDway SLM. The light also has modularized design, and the amount of LEDs can go from 10 to 60. Its Nano Optic technology provides over 20 kinds of light shapes.

Aside from CREE, German company HELLA, one of the top 3 car lighting makers in the world, also makes its way into the public lighting market. Eying the prospects of lighting market and the LED street lamp bidding projects released by the German government in 2013, HELLA started getting into the public lighting business since three years ago.

With abundant experience in car lighting, it was a smooth transition for HELLA to crossover to the regular lighting area. The company, not surprisingly, targets at car-related markets, such as gas station lighting and road lighting.

Besides LED street lamp and industrial lights, solar LED street lamp could also be seen at the exhibition.

The Spanish lighting fixture maker IndaL, acquired by Philips in 2011, also exhibited a new line of LED street lamps.

Belgium lighting company Schreder, founded in 1908, is known for its effort in public lighting. Due to the fact that most public lighting business is acquired by bidding projects, besides the technological strength, a good relation with the related companies is equally crucial. For this reason, Schreder owns 38 stations around the world.

Despite it being a veteran with 100 years of history in the making, Schreder also started adopting LEDs in its manufactures since four years ago. Over the recent years, the company has been aggressively developing its LED technologies and aims to release wireless control, in the hope of making LED products take up over 50% of its product lines.
