While some players in Taiwan's display industry are optimistic in their forecasts for the penetration rate of LED BLUs in notebook applications this year, saying that the penetration rate could hit 15%, other recent estimates are placing the penetration rate closer to 10%. According to staff from Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar, with limited LED chip suppliers and Japan-based makers not greatly expanding their LED capacity this year, tight supply of LED chips will affect LED-based products. The company therefore expects the penetration rate of notebook-use LED BLUs to be lower than 10% this year, up from about 3% last year.
