Process equipment provider Veeco reported on 3rd August its financial results in 2Q17. The company ended the second quarter with a solid revenue of USD 115.1 million, up 52.9% YoY. Seren Photonics Limited (a developer of semipolar gallium nitride products based near Cardiff, Wales) and BluGlass Limited (ASX:BLG  an Australian technology developer, commercialising breakthrough semiconductor manufacturing process and equipment) have announced the completion of phase 1 of the transfer of Seren’s semipolar GaN template process to the BluGlass MOCVD epitaxial services.

MOCVD equipment is essential to LED production, and graphite wafer carrier is a unique component of MOCVD systems. Due to technology barriers, currently there are only three graphite wafer suppliers globally: German’s SGL Group, Japan’s TOYO TANSO and Dutch company Xycarb.

Veeco Instruments announced  that OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH has completed an agreement naming Veeco as the supplier for Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) and Precision Surface Processing (PSP) systems needed for high-volume LED production in Kulim. According to AIXTRON SE's press release, Japanese group Toyoda Gosei has acquired an enhanced 5x4-inch CRIUS Close Coupled Showerhead (CCS) system to manufacture Blue and Ultra Violet (UV) LEDs. The tool is scheduled for delivery in the first half of 2017.

Chinese investor Fujian Grand Chip Investment Fund (FGC) was supposed to have sealed deal between German semiconductor equipment manufacturers Aixtron on Oct. 6, 2016, but was abruptly called off by the German Economic Ministry this Monday over unspecified national security issues.

Oversupply situations in the LED chip sector, and fierce competition in the general lighting sector over the past few years has aggravated the pricing situation in 2015. Despite the ominous cloud hanging over the LED chip and general lighting sector, German LED chip manufacturer Osram announced last week it would be injecting in total EUR 2 billion (EUR 2.14 billion) in R&D and EUR 1 billion in LED manufacturing in the next five years.

The tool is due for delivery in the first quarter 2016. 

According to the latest 2015 Global LED Industry Supply and Demand Database Report by LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, capacity expansion efforts of Chinese LED chip manufacturers have resulted a supply glut with this year’s LED chip supply-demand ratio reaching 22%. LEDinside also estimates that the global MOCVD installed volume in 2015 will grow to 3,130 chambers, among which 1,473 are located in China and will account for 47% of this year’s global MOCVD capacity (MOCVD systems used in the calculation are of the K465i model).

Following Chinese governments declining subsidies in 2015, industry insiders projected a slowdown in global LED production capacity growth rates, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report. The industry, though, still faces oversupply situation as the total volume of MOCVDs will reach 2,000 this year, said Epistar Chairman B.J. Lee.
