Cornell Researchers Blaze a Trail to Environment-Friendly Deep-UV LED

The darkest form of ultraviolet light, known as UV-C, is unique because of its reputation as a killer – of harmful organisms. With wavelengths of between 200 and 280 nanometers, this particular form of UV light penetrates the membranes of viruses, bacteria, mold and dust mites, attacking their DNA and killing them.

Epileds and High Power Lighting jointly launch Bioraytron for UV-C LED Applications

The value of the global market for disinfection reaches US $ 500 billion with applications across residential market, medical and industrial areas. The emergence of energy-efficient products and policy of mercury prohibition contribute to the high value of disinfection industry, enabling deep UV LED products one of market strategy in entering niche markets. Epileds, an UV and IR LED chip and High Power Lighting, manufacturer of LED packages and modules are optimistic about the potential DUV LEDs hold. The two companies reached agreement to actively develop and deploy a Taiwan-based DUV LED supply chain. Epileds and High Power Lighting announced at a product conference at the end of 2016 the joint venture company named Bioraytron. The joint company will enable vertical integration of DUV LED applications, starting from epitaxy to LED chip manufacturing while focusing on the sales of UV-C LED packages and modules.

LEDinside Projects UVC LED Market to Reach US $356M by 2020

Light-emitting diode (LED) manufacturers are now looking to develop niche application markets that can provide higher margins as the price competition in the LED lighting market has become too difficult for them. Among these niche application markets, ultraviolet (UV) LED has attracted investments from many manufacturers because of its enormous market value. The UV LED market has much higher technological barrier to entry, so prices of its products are several tens of times greater than those of the general LED products. LEDinside, a division of TrendForce, states that the global UV LED market in 2015 is estimated at US$122 million, which is around the same level as in 2014, in its 2015 Global LED Industry Supply and Demand Database Report. The absence of noticeable growth in the market value this year is mainly attributed to the rapid decline in UV-A LED prices (UV-A spectrum is between 320~400nm in wavelength).
