LEDs Predicted to Replace Streetlights in India by 2020

Recently, insiders in India showed their opinions about the tendency of LED development. According to Amrit Manwani, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur, LEDs will take the place of conventional streetlights by 2020. He thought that the LEDs consume one-third of the power consumed by the conventional streetlights and also illuminate a larger area. India800 Foundation, an organisation which works for people living below poverty line ,has supported solar LED lamps for over 50 backward villages that do not have electricity. The villages would be among 120 villages that would be covered under the project in the country. It’s said that the Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (HAREDA) has intended to install solar-powered LED streetights in Gurgaon. The National Defence Academy of India to Replace 1 lakh Lights with LEDs

The National Defence Academy (NDA) of India has decided to replace about one lakh lights with LED lamps in key establishments of the academy for energy saving. At present, The NDA has nearly 3,100 street lamps, mostly sodium or mercury vapour lights ranging from 75 watts to 250 watts. And 30 street lights have been replaced by 28-watt LED lamps on an experimental basis. NMC Plans to Make LED Traffic Signals Retrofit

Reportedly, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has planed to install new LED traffic signals at 61 locations in the city at a cost of about Rs 3 crore in the coming financial year 2011-2012.
