Pittsburgh and San Jose start converting street lights to LEDs

It’s reported that Pittsburgh is considering the replacement of its 40,000 street lights with LED fixtures. It is estimated that it could save up to upwards of $1.4 million a year in energy and maintenance costs, and “look nicer.”

A town in Japan illuminated entirely by LEDs

It’s reported that the residential development of more than 200 houses in Azabu no Oka, Japan will use only LED fixtures for all its outdoor lighting. That means the areas will be lit entirely by LEDs. The development is being built by Toyota Smile Life Inc and has been dubbed Toyota “LED Town.”

Pentagon goes green with Cree 4,200 LED Fixtures

Cree Inc. announced that it will supply more than 4,200 recessed LED fixtures for part of the Pentagon called Wedge 5. According to Cree, The LEDs are expected to use 22 percent less power than the fluorescent lights they will replace, enough to pay back their extra cost in four years. Cree would not disclose details of the Pentagon contract — it’s part of a long line of government deals for Cree dating back to the company’s founding — but the company said the fixtures retail for about $380 apiece.

Energy Focus, Inc. selected by DARPA SBIR to Develop 'Explosion-Proof' Lighting

It’s reported that Energy Focus, Inc. has been selected by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Program to develop Explosion Proof LED fixtures. Under the project, titled "Explosion-Proof Solid State Lighting Fixture for Extreme Environments.", Energy Focus will further develop solid state lighting fixtures.

LED streetlights test is under way in Raleigh

It’s reported that Officials with Raleigh and Progress Energy are testing nine energy-efficient streetlights downtown to determine how well they withstand extreme heat, cold and rain. The last of the nine experimental lamps was installed Tuesday in front of Progress' downtown office tower on Davie Street. If the lights live up to their promise, they could take a significant bite out of Raleigh's $5.3 million annual streetlight bill.
