Lights 4 Living Respond to the Replacement for LED Rare Earth Element

Recently researchers from the University of Washington have developed silicon-based nano particles to replace the expensive rare earth element (REE) phosphors currently used in LEDs. The REE phosphors in LEDs were used to soften the blue light emitted by LEDs. The silicon-based nano particles, derived from sand, now are used to do the softening. Chang-Ching Tu and Ji Hoo managed to separate the nano-sized particles from wafers of silicon. When the particle size is smaller than five nanometers it will start to glow. When the red-emitting silicon nano particles ar...

Simple Lighting Company Explores Versatility of LEDs

Lipscombe explains that the main task in hand was ensuring that the lighting of its UK flagship be as alluring as the brand itself. In order to achieve this it was necessary to reduce the intensity of light in certain areas as well as being able to deal with different contrasts and reflections. He recalls how light had to be carefully controlled using lenses and reflectors to prevent it bouncing around any high gloss surfaces.

Japan Teams up with California to Design Low Droop and High Efficacy LEDs

Recently, researchers from Japan and California have jointly made a breakthrough on blue and green LEDs to reduce efficiency droop. According to the research team, they designed low droop and high efficacy LEDs by altering the direction of the crystal structure within semiconductor films. Droop refers to significant drop in efficiency at extreme currents. It is one of the major factors that retard the growth of the solid-state lighting market. Household bulbs generate white light due to the mix of wavelengths with the hue produced from blue and green LEDs. These valuab...

Sandia National Laboratories Predicts Diode Laser Lighting Could Compete With LED

According to Sandia National Laboratories recent research, diode lasers could eventually compete with LEDs for home and commercial lighting solutions. Sandia National Laboratories recently asked participants to rate various LED and diode laser lighting scenarios and found that in some situations consumers preferred the diode lasers. As we know, LEDs are the most energy-efficient replacements for the incandescent bulbs. But less people know LEDs lose efficiency at currents higher than 0.5 amps. The diode laser actually improves at higher currents, which means it ca...
