Sony Abandons OLED for 4K LCD

Sony is suspending OLED TV production as sales slump. The Japanese manufacturer is instead turning their sights to 4K LCD TVs as they are less expensive to manufacturer and sell at much lower prices compared to OLED TVs, reports Japan’s Nikkei. Half of the TV sets Sony intends to launch on the market next year include 4K sets.

AUO Instead of Hon Hai to be Sony’s Contract Supplier for LCD TVs

Sony has decided to shift more contract orders to AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) and its production arms from Hon Hai, likely due to Hon Hai build ties-up with its major competitor Sharp in the market for LCD TVs. On August 22, AOC TV has signed Bollywood actress Kalki Koechlin as brand ambassador, and has announced that it targets to double revenue from India to Rs 1,100 crore in 2013, as it looks to corner a "significant" market share in the growing LCD and LED television segment here. Tera Xtal to Set Up Crystal-Growing and Substrate Plants in China in 1Q12

Recently, Chien Fu Shieh, the Chairman of LED sapphire substrate manufacturer Tera Xtal(4969), revealed that the company plans to establish crystal-growing and substrate plants in China. The plan will be carried out in 1Q12 at the soonest. Shieh pointed out that LCD TV’s weak demand caused a steep drop in the prices of sapphire ingot and substrate.
