2014 LED Market Recap: LED Chip and Package Supply and Demand Swings

One of the main LED industry indicators to look into in 2014 is manufacturers exponentially growing production volume. Where did this production capacity come from? Production capacity seen in 2014 mostly came from 2Q13 LED package expansions. A cloud of doom crept over the industry in 2012, as the industry’s oversupply situation triggered price wars and bankruptcy tsunami. Yet, in 2Q13 severe LED package shortages emerged as the slumping lighting market abruptly boomed. Many LED package manufacturers shared an optimistic market outlook at the time, some even doubled production capacity in a relatively short period.

Lextar 2013 Revenue Sees Growth

Vertically integrated Taiwanese LED manufacturer Lextar December revenue reached NT $1.1 billion (US $36.6 million), a decline of 5.8 percent from November but growth of 51.9 percent compared with December 2012. Revenue for 4Q13 was NT $3.32 billion, an increase of 40.9 compared to the same period in 2012. Revenue for 2013 as a whole was NT $13.7 billion, growth of 36.57 percent from NT $10.1 billion in 2012.

Epiled 2013 Revenue Dipped 2%

Taiwanese LED chip manufacturer Epileds released their December consolidated revenue. Affected by stocktaking towards the end of 2013, revenue for December reached NT $110 million (US $3.7 million), a decrease of 6.87 percent compared to November but a yearly growth of 16.38 percent. The company revenue for 4Q13 was NT $345 million, an increase of 6.76 percent from 3Q. Total revenue for 2013 reached NT $1.32 billion, with a yearly decrease of 2.15 percent due to impact from price drops.

Spurred by LED lighting and mobile device market demands, sapphire substrate manufacturers have been actively expanding their production capacity, according to TrendForce subsidiary LEDinside’s “Global Sapphire Substrate Market 2013” research report. The top five sapphire ingot manufacturers for instance, have seen 2-inch equiv. sapphire substrate monthly production capacity grow by 75% to 7800Kmm compared to 2012.

LEDinside:M&A in China and Taiwan’s LED chip industry accelerates in 2013

According to LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce, starting from August 2012, at least 5 M&A cases occurred in China and Taiwan; Epistar, for example, acquired 49% of Huga’s equity, and Sanan Opto acquired 120 million of FOREPI’s common stock. LEDinside indicated that starting from 2010, Chinese LED chip industries have aggressively invested in chips and caused severe oversupply in the market; chip price has continued to decline, and most industries have been struggling to survive in the industry. Even with the economic recovery, upstream LED chip manufacturers still failed to extricate themselves from the oversupply situation. Therefore, it is reasonable to conclude that M&A is the only solution to this problem.

TrendForce: Benefited From Outdoor Lighting Replacement Demand, Worldwide LED Outdoor Lighting Market Value Grows By 46% in 2013.

The latest market report published by LEDinside, a research division of TrendForce showed that LED outdoor lighting replacements will be popular worldwide from 2013 to 2015, with Asian countries including China, Japan, and Taiwan acting most aggressively. Promoted by the policy, the LED outdoor lighting market value will be up to 2,478 million USD in 2013, an annual growth over 46%. In other emerging countries such as Thailand, Russia, Latin America and Africa, considerable streetlight replacements will also be installed in 2014. The installation of LED streetlight replacements will gradually slow down in 2015, and the number of worldwide LED streetlight replacements and newly installed LED streetlights will be maintained at approximately 10 million/year.

TrendForce:Benefiting from smart phone and TV stocking demand, LED manufacturers gradually increases revenue in January 2013

According to LEDinside, the LED research division of TrendForce, the total revenue of Taiwanese listed LED manufacturers in January 2013 is 8,220 million NTD (+21.5%MoM, +39.9%YoY). LEDinside indicated that in addition to the fourth quarter of 2012 (traditional off season), the TV manufacturers’ delay in stocking will also cause difficulties in the fourth quarter revenue of LED manufacturers.
