Diodes Incorporated Launched AL8400 Linear LED Driver Controller

Diodes Incorporated has launched the AL8400 linear LED driver controller designed to regulate LED current via an external transistor across wide variations of high brightness LEDs.   The controller is capable of directly operating from 2.2V to 18V and will drive either N-channel MOSFET or NPN Bipolar transistors, and it can be widely used in LED chains includeing illumination, indication or signage systems.

Based on Power Integrations’ LNK457DG, a member of the innovative LinkSwitch-PL family of LED driver ICs optimized for compact, non-isolated installations, the company has introduced a new reference design (RDK-251) for a 5-watt offline LED driver that includes flicker-free TRIAC dimming and single-stage power factor correction (PFC). The new design features a single constant-current output of 350 mA at a nominal LED string voltage of 15 V.

Cree and Habitat for Humanity Complete World’s First All-LED Habitat Home

This past weekend, Cree, Inc. (Nasdaq: CREE) and Habitat for Humanity of Durham celebrated the completion of the world’s first Habitat for Humanity house lit entirely with LED fixtures and bulbs. Long Island Replaces Streetlights with LED

Long Island, Smithtown in America is replacing over 10 percent of its streetlights with LED.   According to Traffic Safety Director Mitchell Crowley, who is overseeing the project, the new lights, paid for with federal stimulus money through a grant of more than $1 million, will convert about 1,500 of the town's 11,600 streetlights to LED. So far, the town has installed about 200 light fixtures. The switch is expected to save about $225,000 a year or $2.2 million over the fixtures' 10-year life.

Taiwan ITRI Applies for U.S. Energy Star Certification

Taiwan's Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is applying for U.S. Energy Star certification on the test of LED lighting products. According to Chuang Po-nien, deputy director of the ITRI's Center for Measurement Standards (CMS), the accreditation is expected to be achieved in the first quarter of 2011. The CMS is an organization authorized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs's Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection to conduct testing for products, including LED lighting, seeking national CNS certification.
