「LEDs 2008」 Program is Upcoming

It’s reported that LEDs 2008 is to be headlined by key industry players include Philips Lumileds Lighting, Cree Inc, Osram Opto Semiconductors, Toyoda Gosei, Nichia, the US EPA and Audi. This year’s event set for Monday, September 29, 2008 – Wednesday, October 1, 2008 at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina in San Diego, CA, US will highlight the impressive growth and key developments that have occurred in the industry during the past year and provide a roadmap for future development.

Because the LED industry continues to grow at 10-15% per year and is expected to climb as high as $7 billion by 2010, the future looks bright. This performance has been fueled by increased adoption of LEDs in several strategic end-use markets including camera flash, projection displays, LCD backlighting and automotive headlamps.

It’s disclosed that the topics will be addressed by several speakers at LEDs 2008 including someone who will detail how LEDs are being increasingly adopted into LCD backlighting systems by companies such as HP and Apple who have begun to utilize these systems in their PC notebooks. Stephan Berlitz of Audi will discuss his company’s expanded use of HB LED headlamps and how it is strengthening their brand image.

According to the related authority, LEDs continue to make gains in the general illumination market. The recent advent of several bans on incandescent lighting has led to a greater number of users are looking to solid state lighting as an environmentally friendly and energy efficient alternative. Terry McGowan of the American Lighting Association will examine residential lighting and will highlight some unique industry requirements that must be met for LEDs to become more commonly used in the household. Sheila Kennedy and Violich Architecture will expand on this theme by looking at HB LEDs in architecture while placing additional emphasis on solving vertical integration problems. These talks and others will highlight the inroads LEDs have made in general illumination while also detailing obstacles that must yet be overcome for LEDs to acquire a greater share of this lucrative market.

Of course, in many ways industry growth is driven by the work being done by the LED manufacturers, all of whom are represented on the LEDs 2008 program and will also participate on our manufacturer’s panel.

This year’s panelists are George Craford, Chief Technical Officer for Philips Lumileds, John Edmond, founder of Cree, Christian Fricke, Vice President of Research and Development for Osram Opto Semiconductor, Daniel Doxsee of Nichia America, and Bill Kennedy General Manager of the LEDs Department at Toyoda Gosei. This forum will provide an excellent opportunity to interact with industry leaders and to learn more about the issues that are most salient to industry objectives.

New to this year’s program includes the audience select Best in Show Awards and the Exhibitor Forum where attendees will be the first to hear product announcements, live demos and participate in question and answer sessions as industry suppliers discuss their latest technology solutions.

At a time when the LEDs market continues to experience explosive economic and technological growth, IntertechPira’s LEDs 2008 conference is both timely and practical, providing a unique opportunity to gain the necessary knowledge and network with industry leaders from around the world on this dynamic and growing industry.

LED light to illuminate Tunnel in Germany

It's reported that Dellux Technologies Inc., Canada, an international leader in LED tunnel lighting, has selected Golden DRAGON LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors for the luminaires to be installed in the 「Thüringer Schmücketunnel」 on the A71 in the German state Thüringen. Upon installation of the new LED luminaires, in the fall of 2008, it will be the first tunnel in Germany and the longest in Europe to be illuminated by LED light.

The Dellux luminaires and the LED light sources from OSRAM combine to provide a virtually maintenance-free light source with a minimum life of 130,000 hours. Thanks to Dellux's patented LED Degradation Compensation technology, the luminaires being installed use 30% less energy than the 70W high-intensity discharge lamps that have traditionally been used. Trials have already commenced in one of the bores.

Dellux's technology combined with OSRAM's Golden DRAGON LEDs guarantee a minimum life span of 15 years without light degradation. 「For tunnel lighting in particular, this is a major benefit because maintaining or replacing lamps is not only an expensive business but is also inconvenient for drivers and poses a safety risk,」 said Michael Fiebig, Marketing Director for Solid State Lighting at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. Fiebig added 」What's more, the light sources and luminaires exceed the high safety standards for tunnel lighting. They tolerate heat, are mechanically robust, and are insensitive to pollution.」 Another benefit is that OSRAM LEDs have a stable lumen degradation curve and show hardly any color location shifts throughout their life, as long-term tests have documented. Together with Dellux patented light degradation technology, an impressive minimum life span of 130,000 hours can be achieved, while maintaining the required light levels.

As a specialist in tunnel lighting, Dellux has developed an intelligent lighting concept for tunnel lighting applications such as the 「Thüringer Schmücketunnel」 that fully exploits the benefits of Golden DRAGON LEDs, with customized electronic circuitry and software to further increase the life of the system. 「We have installed redundant LEDs in each luminaire to offset soiling and degradation losses,」 said Wolfgang Medenwald, VP Business Development Europe, Dellux Technologies. 「We also operate the LEDs at only 85% of their rated current to achieve greater efficiency and durability. Our patented light degradation compensation technology can maintain the required light levels for a minimum of 15 years despite the difficult conditions in the tunnel.」

LEDs illumination to supplant incandescent and fluorescent lamps

It’s reported that some of the largest lamp bulb manufacturers have become convinced that the LED will soon supplant both incandescent and compact fluorescent lamps for illumination. In fact, the nation’s big three of lighting — General Electric, Osram Sylvania and Royal Philips Electronics — are embracing a new era of more efficient technologies. Encouraged by legislation and the rising cost of energy, as well as concerns about greenhouse gases, consumers are swapping out incandescent bulbs.

Kaj den Daas, chairman and chief executive of Philips Lighting, said the bulk of its R & D budget, which is 5.2 percent of the company’s global lighting revenue, is for LED research. Philips is betting the store on the LED, which it expects to represent 20 percent of its professional lighting revenue in two years.

Though compact fluorescents are beginning to replace standard light bulbs in many homes, lighting executives see this as an interim technology. Typically, today's compact fluorescent bulb uses about 20 percent of the energy needed for a standard incandescent lamp bulb to create the same amount of light. Today’s LED’s use about 15 percent, next-generation LED lamps, still in the laboratory will do even better.

In one case, by lighting all of the building’s exterior and most of its interior with LEDs, a company spent $12,000 more than the $6000 needed to light the facility with a mixture of incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. But by using LEDs, the company is saving $7000 a year in energy costs and will not need to change a bulb for 20 years. It expects to recoup its additional investment in less than two years.

A standard 60-watt incandescent usually costs less than $1.00. An equivalent compact fluorescent is about $2. But in Europe this September, Philips, the Dutch company dealing in consumer electronics, health care machines and lighting, is to introduce the Ledino, its first LED replacement for a standard incandescent. Priced at $107 a piece, it is not likely to have more than a few takers.

Osram’s Golden Dragons LEDs illuminate fountains in Beijing’s Olympic Park

It's reported that Osram Opto Semiconductors and Tong Fang Co. Ltd. use Osram Golden Dragon LEDs to illuminate the elegant dragon-shaped water fountains in Beijing's Olympic Park.

Dragon-shaped water fountains for the Olympic Games were outfitted with Osram's Golden Dragons, with lens and enhanced thin-film LED components, providing the 「dragon」 with its characteristic golden glow, a lamp containing 24 Osram Golden Dragon LEDs radiates yellow light upwards to a height of 15 meters, illuminating the 「dragon」 for four to five hours every evening, turning an already impressive visual into a truly stunning sight to behold. Altogether 1,920 lamps containing 46,080 Golden Dragon LEDs help bring the dragon fountain to life.

Tong Fang, a company engaged in the information technology, energy and environment industries ultimately chose to work with Osram Opto Semiconductors because of the certain benefits. It is the first time that Tong Fang discussed their idea for the dragon fountain with Osram, as it was a perfect opportunity to show the versatility, efficiency and advanced technology behind their Golden Dragon LEDs. This kind of innovative and creative thinking is precisely how they aim to revolutionize the lighting industry in China and the rest of the world.

The LEDs come with one of the narrowest viewing angle integrated lenses in the industry, taking up less space and reducing the need for secondary optics. Furthermore, the high optical efficiency (61 lm/W) of these yellow LEDs enhances energy efficiency, while the over 50,000 hours lifespan minimizes maintenance costs. Tong Fang has already received extremely positive feedbacks from people who've witnessed the fountain in action, especially with respect to the golden color, which resonates with traditional Chinese perceptions of dragons, as they symbolize power, prosperity and celebration; and this summer is set to be one of the biggest celebrations ever.

LEDs are replacing some light bulbs gradually

Recently, the Sentry Equipment Corp. in Oconomowoc, Wis., was considering how to light its new factory, the company's president, Michael Farrell decided to try LEDs. At last he chose to light the building's exterior and most of its interior with LEDs, a light source that many bulb manufacturers are now convinced will supplant incandescent and compact fluorescent bulbs.

The company spent $12,000 more than the $6,000 needed to light the facility with incandescent and fluorescent bulbs. But by using LEDs, the company is saving $7,000 a year in energy costs, will not need to change a bulb for 20 years and will recoup its additional investment in less than two years.

The nation's Big Three of lighting -- General Electric, Osram Sylvania and Royal Philips Electronics -- are embracing more efficient technologies as consumers, encouraged by legislation and rising energy costs, are swapping out incandescent bulbs.

However, the bulb makers face a tough problem, their businesses were built on regular replacement of light bulbs. How do you make a profit when new lighting may commonly last 50 to 100 times as long as a standard bulb? Another challenge is the price of LEDs. A standard 60-watt incandescent costs less than $1. An equivalent compact fluorescent is about $2. But in Europe this September, the Dutch company Philips is to introduce the Ledino, its first LED replacement for a standard incandescent. Priced at $107 a bulb, it is unlikely to have more than a few takers.

While compact fluorescents are replacing incandescents in many homes, lighting executives see them as an interim technology. They say the large size of the bulbs, the inability to dim many of them, the unpleasant color of the light and the 5 milligrams of mercury in each bulb will limit their appeal.

Osram claims a record from R&D LED

It's reported Osram is claiming a record for luminous flux and efficacy from an LED driven at 350 mA.

It says that its development engineers have achieved new records for the brightness and efficiency of white LEDs in the laboratory. Under standard conditions with an operating current of 350 mA, brightness peaked at a value of 155 lm, and efficacy at 136 lm/W.

White prototype LEDs with 1 mm2 chips were used. The light produced had a color temperature of 5000 K, with color (x,y) coordinates at (0.349, 0.393).

As shown in the graph, the LEDs can be driven at 1.4 A, and produce up to 500 lm.

The key to success was a perfectly matched system of optimized chip technology, a highly advanced and extremely efficient light converter and a special high-performance package. By far, Osram has already applied for patents for the technologies that lie behind these records.

All the properties that light sources need for backlighting medium-sized LCDs (5 to 20”)
are combined in OSRAM’s new high-power Ceramos Reflector LED in its tiny package.
Developed for injecting light into a light guide, it offers high brightness and impressive
efficiency. The LED also withstands temperatures as high as 150°C and is extremely
durable with a life of up to 50,000 hours.

Thanks to ThinGaN technology, the Ceramos Reflector provides strong light, coupled with high
luminous efficacy of 70 lm/W from an operating current of 80 mA. Its small ceramic package
measures just 2.3 x 3.2 x 0.8 mm and is thermally stable, allowing high packing densities. An
oval out-coupling window enables light to be injected into thin light guides only 2 mm high. This
is in keeping with the latest trend for slimmer and slimmer displays with high luminance.
Applications include satellite navigation devices for road vehicles and aircraft and any other
displays that need to be read in bright ambient light.

These high-power LEDs are resistant to shocks and vibrations and are suitable for standard
solder processes. They do not use any mercury at all and meet the requirements of the RoHS
directive. “More and more display manufacturers are looking for an eco-friendly alternative to
cold cathode fluorescence lamps”, said Winfried Schwedler, Marketing Manager for LCD
Backlighting at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors. “With our high-power LEDs such as the
Ceramos, we offer ultra-bright and efficient light sources that also save energy.”
