It's reported that Taiwan industry watchers estimated the on-going Beijing Olympic Games to give a big boost to the LED lighting industry from the huge number of LED lamps in conjunction with the energy-conservation tone lighting up magnificent games monuments, public utilities, main roads, and traffic lights in the Chinese capital city.

The Beijing authority uses the lamps to illuminate the stage of the games opening ceremony, in the flamboyant opening ceremony, 44,000 LED lamps lit the 147 meter x 36 meter screen on the ground that displayed an ancient scroll. At least 36,000 LED lamps light up the translucent exterior of the gigantic Water Cube at night. Besides these buildings, Beijing has built a gigantic LED screen measuring 30 meters x 200 meters. Opto Tech Corp. of Taiwan was contracted to supply LEDs to the screen. The Taiwan supplier has also been contracted by the Suzhou government to supply the lamps to its gigantic screen.

Harvatek Corp., another leading Taiwan LED maker, was contracted to supply a baseball stadium in the mainland with LED lamps. Ligitek Electronics Co., Ltd. won contracts to supply billboards in several scenic sites in the mainland with LED lamps while Formosa Epitaxy Inc. has landed contracts to supply expitaxy wafers to 20,000 LED roadway lights to be planted in Shanghai.

Beijing authority plans to exploit various green technologies including LED and solar energy to help it reach the goal of trimming 10% of electricity consumption nationwide by 2010.

Harvatek to be No. 2 Taiwan LED Maker in EPS for 1st Half 2008

It’s reported that Harvatek Inc., a Taiwan supplier of SMT chip LEDs, scored net profits of NT$0.9 per share for the first half of this year to be the No.2 supplier of this kind on the island, with increasing sales of its LED applications for notebook PCs.

Besides, Harvatek posted July revenue of about NT$250 million, sharply up 25% from a month earlier. The company is even expected to see a double-digit growth in its third-quarter revenue, due partly to a seasonal boom and partly to growing orders for its LEDs used in notebook PCs.

Harvatek posted net profits of NT$0.58 per share and a gross profit rate of 29% in the first quarter of this year, and the company optimistically projects its second-quarter gross profit rate to be maintained at over 20%.

Recently, Harvatek has tried to shift its focus to sales of LEDs applied in notebook PCs from models for mobile phones, and thus landed quite a few orders for blue and white LEDs used in keyboards of notebook PCs. an LED keyboard is an increasingly popular application for LED for notebook PCs, the product will most likely be the main driver of growth for Harvatek`s business operations in the future. At the moment, the company`s sales of this kind contribute 10% to the total, and are expected to further surge in the third quarter.

LED market slow in 2Q08

The LED sector in Taiwan generally had weaker-than-expected sales in April despite players' optimism that orders would be picking up in the second quarter.

LED packagers Unity Opto Technology and Harvatek saw their April sales drop sequentially.

Unity said shipments of applications for LED backlighting dipped in April amid clients' inventory adjustments. The company's April revenues declined 4.6% sequentially to NT$292 million (US$9.58 million), which nevertheless represents a 24% on-year increase.

Unity said shipments to the LED backlighting segment will return to normal in May.

Harvatek's revenues for April dropped 6% sequentially to NT$282 million, with the company predicting limited revenue growth for the first half of 2008. With an order visibility of one to two months, Harvatek said the high season will not come until the third quarter.

While sales performance for the second quarter may not be weak, margins for the quarter will be able to stay at similar levels to those for the first quarter, the company said.

But LED chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy managed to see a 2.51% sequential growth in April revenues to NT$162 million, a company sales record. But the company pointed out that while the LED market saw better-than-expected demand in the first quarter, growth in the second quarter has been slow.
