Taiwan Energy Policy Boost LED’s Development

Recently, the Executive Yuan, Taiwan’s Cabinet, announced it would replace all the island’s incandescent-type traffic lights with LED lamps in three years, and replace all the incandescent lamps currently serving throughout the island with energy-saving lamps in four years. Taiwan government’s energy-conservation policy will give a big boost to the island’s energy-saving lamp industry, in which many manufacturers have planned to begin volume production or sheer shipment some time this quarter.

Energy-saving lamps will first see business opportunities generated by the policy, which they say will fuel massive use of the lamps. China Electrical, currently Taiwan’s No.1 lamp maker, pointed out that the government policy would bring about huge market potential for energy-saving lighting fixtures and T5 fluorescent tubes. The uses of LED lamps would further help reduce energy consumption and CO2-gas emission. Industry watchers estimate energy-saving lamps to be one of China Electrical major revenue earners this year.

In line with the policy, the lamp maker plans to branch into production of T5 lamps using its cold cathode fluorescent lamp technology. An automated production line calling for NT$300-400 million is on the drawing board.

Lite-On has acquired Philips’ patented technology for making energy-saving lamps and entered into alliance with the heavyweight lamp maker to produce the lamps by becoming its contract supplier, and has delivered its lamps to major customers including Philips for verifications. The company’s factory in Zhenjiang of the mainland Chinese province of Jiangsu will begin volume production of the lamps in September and its factory in Indonesia, whose output capacity is much bigger, will enter into volume production in July next year.

Meanwhile, Industry watchers estimate local LED roadway-light industry to begin producing results only when all the lights on the island are changed to LED types, think that LED has lower penetration in roadway-light market than in traffic-light market and make foray into household-lighting market only when the lamp’s price runs close to that of energy-saving lamp.

Industry Interview with the Liquidleds Lighting Corp(Demo Vedio Clip)

LEDinside recently conducted an in-depth interview with Liquidleds Lighting Corp (Liquidleds) CEO, Mr. Kun-Yuan Chiang (Chiang), in relation to the industry of LED.

Liquidleds has been awarded the “golden medal” for its invention of “High Power LED Light Bulbs Packaging with Liquid Immersed Heat Management Solution”, which not only enhances LED illumination, but also improves the LED heat dissipation, adjusts the LED light direction and reduces the LED cost by “Moscow International Salon of Industrial Property Archimedes”.

Chiang, the inventor of “disposable heat pad”, specializes in LED heat dissipation design including its newly creative solution associated with heat management of which are combined with the use of “liquid” and “thermal pad”, and also holds many KSFs (Key Successful Factors) and patents.

AC LED which is suitable for interior light is needed

”When Liquidleds was established, it tried many ways to develop new technologies of LED heat dissipation and accumulated many design knowhow”, said Chiang.

Liquidleds had its first contact with high power LED in 2001, and obtained “LUXEON LED”, which is formed by LED lenser, reflective cup, and glass glue, from Lumileds US. The heat dissipation of “LUXEON LED” is designed with a high conduction substrate and is packaged with integrated thermoelectrical module. Later, Liquidleds had continued to use a variety of high power LED, and still tried to find a good heat dissipation material.

Chiang had tried and tested almost 2,000 types of materials and completed the method of heat dissipation of LED lamp by using special liquid and thermal pad, also providing a high luminous efficiency to this lamp. For now is to wait for a proper AC LED. However, Seoul Semiconductor launched its new product of AC LED in 2007 just in the wake of related studies on AC LED being published. Liquidleds has immediately contacted and cooperated with them; thus, a brand new AC LED lamp integrated with the heat dissipation solution provided by Liquidleds being formed. At that day, we saw 2W and 4W LED lamps associate with good light shapes and luminous efficiencies. The temperature difference between lamp temperature and room temperature is around 20 degrees centigrade.

Advantages and disadvantages of AC LED

But why is the AC LED? “Because AC LED is workable for household electricity without installing the AC to DC converter”, said Chiang. So, it can save the cost of converters. Also, since the life span of converter is shorter than that of LED components; therefore, it is possible that a LED lamp should malfunction only because of a broken converter, but not of its ended product life. Another distinctive feature of AC LED is its manufacturing has been processed by the area-array pad, which will take 60 turns / s with a 60Hz alternating current, and also makes the life span of AC LED longer than that of DC LED.

The DC LED has been commonly used as the flashlight which is a battery-powered device; therefore, it is quite suitable for the feature of DC LED since no additional converter being required.

However, there are two disadvantages of AC LED. One is that its luminous efficiency is not higher than DC LED’s. It is because that DC LED is still the mainstream product. It is possible that the luminous efficiency of AC LED will catch up with or even exceed that of DC LED in the future. And the second one is the electric shock of AC LED. Therefore, when designing the heat dissipation of AC LED lamps, the thermal pad can not be exposed and should be placed somewhere inside the LED lamps. By doing so, the heat of the thermal pads will be released by liquids. That is also the core design value of Liquidleds.

Mr. Chiang also mentioned that when he contacted Seoul Semiconductor, they did not notice that this LED heat dissipation solution can benefit LED light bulbs. They used to say the application range of AC LED could be wide. However, Chiang still believes that AC LED is suitable, applicable for interior lights, and LED street lamps.

Liquid Immersed Heat Management Solution solves the problems of “Light Loss”, “Heat Dissipation”, and “Light Shape”.

Since the weakness of the LED luminary is the “light-loss”. Its luminous efficiency will be getting weak after being used for a period of time. The degree of loss depends on different products. Yet, the critical point of solving that problem will rely on the “heat dissipation”. If the heat dissipation is not good, the light dissipation of LEDs will worsen.

“The heat dissipation solution is combined with the use of special liquid and thermal pads, which transfers the heat of LED to metals by means of thermal pads. The metal is a heat retaining material; it can transfer the heat of LED out of the chip very fast. When thermal pads are immersed in the liquid, the heat will be conducted into the liquid”, said Chiang.

The liquid is hard to retain heat, if you want to increase the temperature of the liquid by one degree, then you have to provide a lot of heat. Also, the heat will be diffused and mixed evenly in the liquid by its own convection. In simple terms, its design concept is similar to that of “immersion heater” of which the liquid is surrounded by a glass shell that exposes to air. The heat of the liquid can be conducted outward by the air-convection. By dosing so, it forms a complete heat dissipation convection system.

Chiang also believes that if LED luminaries want to become the main light sources, the best way is to unify the specifications of lamp-holders for favoring customers in relation to their replacing the LED light bulbs. Moreover, the market LED light bulbs are either big or too long (its size will depend on the types of heat dissipation). If AC LED light bulbs have adopted a conventional heat dissipation method such as back heat dissipation, it probably will not meet the needs from customers.

Besides, the use of some DC LED light bulbs will be subject to the environmental constraints. In terms of AC LED light bulbs manufactured by Liquidleds, in addition to no environmental constraints being concerned when using them, since they are vacuum-packaged, the entry of dust will not be allowed.

In terms of luminous efficiency of AC LED light bulbs, since they are designed by special liquid, during the LED light output, an internal reflection will be conducted. Together with the consideration of the proportion of the liquid, the light output efficiency of these LED light bulbs will reach over 65%, and could be better than that of other LED light bulbs of which the light output efficiency is less than 50%. Also, its light-shape can be modified including wide light in addition to the narrow light (or the spot light); furthermore, to broaden its application range.

”The solution of LED street lamps has been developed by Liquidleds and its cooperative firms. This street lamp can be formed by arraying 40 small AC LED light bulbs. Its light-shapes can support each other, and will not affect the mutual heat dissipation. If one light bulb is broken, all you have to do is to replace that one without sending entire lamp for repairing. It will dramatically reduce the cost of repair, maintenance and replacement of the lamp”, said Chiang.

LED luminary, which has already acquired safety certifications and patents, should be popularized in order to save global energy before its price decreased.

Will AC LED light bulb combined with special liquid be applicable for standard lamp-holder(E27 or E26)? In terms of this question, Chiang said the max weight is 2 kilos according to the weight regulation of the energy saving light. The weight of their 4W Led light bulb is only 95 grams, 2W LED light buld is only 65 grams, and is in compliance with the regulation. If the power of the LED light bulb is expanded, its weight will still be within the range of the regulated weight.

“Under the environment where heat dissipation is required and luminous angle should be enlarged, to obtain related safety certification is relatively easier, and the Liquidleds has already obtained lots of certifications including UL”, said Chiang.

“I think the advantages of the AC LED lamp can be classified including lower price, lower heat dissipation cost, zero risk of electric shock, similar to the use of candescent lamp, easy to be mass produced, possess with a great compatibility of the environment and also cost saving. It is just like the candescent lamp invented by Edison, it is a durable product”, said Chiang.

Chiang also reinforces that they have applied for many patents including the structures of heat dissipation, special condiments of liquid, special packaging ways, unique process of production of AC LED light bulbs, and also includes lots of patents approved by G8 which really contributes to the future development of Liquidleds.

So far, Liquidleds has contacted many companies, and still hopes that the price of household AC LED light bulbs could be in compliance with the market price standard which not only popularizes the AC LED light bulbs but also saves global energy.

It's reported Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Arima Optoelectronics has stressed that its finances and operations remain healthy despite heavy losses in 1Q.

The company saw its June sales drop 59% on year to NT$104 million, with a net loss of NT$82 million for the month. It posted net losses of NT$124 million for the first quarter of 2008. It attributed the poor results to the spinning off its laser diode business last August, and fierce pricing amid weak demand.

The company expects orders for July and August to stay flat compared to June, and growth for the third quarter will not be as strong as the growth it had during the high season in the past, through restructuring and personnel downsizing, it expects to put losses under control in the second half of the year.

Cree expects LED lighting production costs to drop fast, coming close to the levels of fluorescent lamps by 2012. XLamp MC-E has been widely adopted by clients for commercial lighting, flash lights, street lamps and others.Cree showcased its XLamp MC-E LED lighting solution at a demonstration it jointly arranged in Taipei with IC distributor WP Industrial (WPI), a subsidiary of WPG Holdings. WPI displayed driver ICs and related solutions for LED lighting. Cree mentioned, the XLamp MC-E LED is a lighting-class multi-chip LED that provides four times the flux as XLamp XR-E in the same footprint, without compromising thermal performance. XLamp MC-E reduces LED system cost by reducing system complexity and the number of components required.

High Power Lighting: LED lighting market boost in 2010

According to High Power executive, Charles Wei, president of Taiwan-based High Power Lighting, LED lighting will see explosive growth in 2010 when production costs are expected to halve compared to present levels, which focuses on high power LED design, packaging and module manufacturing.

He said LED lighting, with its high production costs at US$20 per 1,000 lm/w, is currently much less competitive than incandescent of fluorescent lamps. Production costs are about US$0.3 per 1,000 lm/w for tungsten lamps and about US$0.6 per 1,000 lm/w for fluorescent lamps, he added. Although many countries are trying to set timeframes for imposing a ban on incandescent light bulbs, LEDs will not be the only lighting alternative. But with LED technology improving, production costs will fall to US$10 per 1,000 lm/w by 2010, making it more competitive and triggering an explosive growth in demand, he commented.

Semisilicon Technology Corp. announce two 3 wires full color LED driver IC, One is 3 wires RGBW LED PWM driver IC，Part number is「DJ5111」.The other is 3 wires RGB LED constant current driver IC，Part number is「DJ5091」.

Except resolution of each color and drive LED output form are different between these two parts. They are major used on series LED cluster string to control color changing. Best advantage is reducing the wires usage. Reduce one or two wires from traditional application to single wire. Not only reduce the cost as well as easy to connect. Storage color pattern and transmit data by simple MCU, easy programming and maintenance. Besides the data series transmission also we can cascade the power to operate to obtain power saving. These techniques get lots of patent in many countries also.

DJ5111 is PWM output suitable use on high voltage clusters application, like light string of sign, building outline string, light bar etc..

DJ5091 is constant current level output suitable use on single RGB LED application, like single RGB LED cluster light string, Christmas light string etc..

Intematix Introduces Complete Line of Patented Chip on Ceramic LEDs and LED Arrays

Intematix Corp., a leading innovator in materials, phosphors, LED lighting components and integration services, today announced a broad expansion of its product offerings with the introduction of a complete line of patented "chip on ceramic" LEDs and LED arrays.

Available through its subsidiary, Intematix Technology Center (ITC) of Yang Mei, Taiwan, the new line of solid state lighting components leverages Intematix' recognized expertise in phosphor and material development to offer solid state lighting manufacturers and integrators reliable, high-efficiency LED components across a full range of color temperatures. Typical performance from an 8000K cool white production device is 80 lumens/watt, while warm white 3300K devices are delivering 70 lumens/watt from the packaged 1 watt devices.

Acquired in June 2007 ITC initially provided marketing and integration support for Intematix phosphors and other key components, including chips and silicones from strategic partners in the greater China market. With direct access to critical components, the center has provided LED packagers with the full compliment of materials necessary for rapid prototyping and deployment of any phosphor-based solid state lighting solution. Since that time, ITC has rapidly expanded its full service integration and production capabilities, and is now in volume production with a range of chip-on-ceramic and integrated light engines/modules to support the needs of solid state lighting system providers.

"There are hundreds luminaire manufacturers, from Tier I down, that are looking for both single-chip LEDs and arrays that can be specifically tailored to their fixtures and applications," says Intematix' Director of Lighting Business Development, Ilkan Cokgor. "These new patent-backed product lines successfully leverage Intematix' knowledge of phosphors, packaging materials, optics, and thermal management to simplify those lighting manufacturer's designs and accelerate their time to market."

Solid state lighting (SSL) offers the promise of a high-quality light source combined with efficiency levels that will soon surpass fluorescent fixtures in terms of overall cost of ownership. All forms of efficient lighting are receiving increased attention as more nations make conservation policies a key priority. Solid state lighting provides additional benefits since LEDs are mercury-free, RoHS compliant and boast substantially increased lifetimes when properly designed and integrated.

The new ITC product lines designated Apus and Cetus, are available now in volume production quantities. The Apus line of single chip packages offers high efficiency in a compact point source that ranges from only 3mm to 5mm square in size. It typically delivers up to 80lm/W at 1W for 5500K cool white and 70lm/W at 1W for 3300K warm white. When making use of Intematix' new red phosphor technology, coloring rendering is typically greater than 90, even at these high efficiency levels. The chip-array-on-ceramic Cetus line is available in configurations from 4 to hundreds of chips in series or parallel, as well as series/parallel combinations.

"The Cetus employs a unique cavity design. Each cavity is connected through LTCC ceramic substrates, allowing ITC to create any desired array configuration and still deliver an illumination profile with a pleasant, smooth and natural looking light," said Mr. Harik Su, ITC’s Vice President of Engineering, and inventor of the unique packaging design. "These arrays really combine the features lighting companies are looking for which are ease of design, tight binning, robust thermal management and a simplified and scalable power and area design." The Cetus line can be directly driven at common DC and AC voltages.
