East Manufacturing Announces New Features to LED Lighting

Ohio East Manufacturing, Randolph, Ohio, has announced it is offering a LED lighting system that is completely sealed against the elements. The system uses sealed “plug-in” connections designed to prevent moisture infiltration and subsequent corrosion from compromising the functionality of the trailer's lighting system, the company says. This moisture-barrier lighting system is now standard equipment on all East aluminum flatbed, dump and transfer trailers.

“The new moisture-barrier system is a return ground system, versus the traditional chassis-ground system, eliminating the opportunity for poor connections between body, chassis and tractor fifth wheel,” says Bob Appleman, director of supply chain management. “There is no splicing needed, no wire nuts, and no junction boxes with the standard lighting system. The system uses wire harnesses with corrosion-resistant Truck-Lite Fit 'N Forget plug-in connections. Each connection is packed with non-conducting dielectric grease to seal out moisture,” Appleman adds.

"East is focused on the goal of making better, more durable trailers that decrease maintenance time and expense for our customers,” says Dave Tate, president of East Manufacturing. “This moisture-barrier lighting system is a perfect example. It is virtually maintenance free, and the life of a LED light is more than 100,000 hours.”

He continues, “So when you combine them with a wiring harness system designed to keep moisture out of the connections, lighting maintenance on an East trailer should be minimal.”

East Manufacturing Corporation offers a full-line of aluminum dump, platform and refuse trailers, steel and aluminum dump bodies, and heavy duty trucking accessories.

GlacialTech launches LED BR30 lights

Recently, GlacialTech Inc announces the availability of BR30 LED lights - the LED BR30 Globes come in two models which range in brightness.

The LED BR30 bulbs are designed to replace the equivalent BR30 globes and lamps available in markets today. Using lower wattage compared with the original product, with the high brightness 720 Lumen illumination. The innovative product incorporates the same structure and style of traditional BR30 bulbs but delivers a brighter performance per watt, with less heat radiation.

GlacialTech LED-BR30 luminary uses Super High-brightness LED emitters that consume just 11 Watts. As a result, the LED-BR30 luminary is much cooler within a range of -20 to +40⁰C with a beam angle of 120 degree. The LED-BR30 globe, using a fraction of the power, is a safe, green environmentally friendly solution which reduces global emissions through reduced power consumption. The efficient cooling structure of the heatsink is optimally designed to keep the >50000hr longevity of the device intact, while maintaining full brightness for longer.

Accepting an Input voltage of 90-240V (AC), with an 11W power consumption. The diameter is 95mm at a length of 127mm, and a weight of 0.3kgs, which means the LED-BR30 lamp can replace any traditional BR30 bulb product.

Manassas to introduce LED street lights

Recently, Manassas is doing an experiment that will likely be common practice in less than 10 years. In the coming weeks, the city will begin the process of selecting a neighborhood for the installation of LED lights in place of the common high pressure sodium lights.

According to renewable energy products company Global Green Energy, LED streetlights have been proven to save as much as 60 percent on energy costs and give off a much lower carbon footprint than the typical streetlight. Each streetlight would cut out as much greenhouse gas produced by a car driving for 14 months.

Electric Utilities Director Gregg Paulson said the demand for the lights has not reached a level yet where the city can afford an LED light at every corner. The cost of one LED light today is $70, nearly 10 times the price of a sodium bulb. In five or 10 years, those lights will be competitively priced and will ultimately be cheaper than what we are buying now. It’s simply an issue of supply and demand.

It’s said that the neighborhood experiment will likely involve around 12 lights, which will be retrofitted on a permanent basis for the new LED bulbs. Manassas would be following Ann Arbor, Mich. as one of the first communities to eventually convert to all LED lights. All of the traffic lights in the city have been converted to LED lights, a common practice in many communities across the country. So far, the city already saves 40 percent on maintenance and reduced energy costs with the new traffic signals.

New York Picks LED Design For New Street Lights

Recently, more than 300,000 street lights and every 40 years or so runs an international design contest looking for ways to improve upon those lights in New York. The winner of the most contests was just announced.

It's an LED street and optional pedestrian light post designed by the Office for Visual Interaction (OVI). It not only looks cooler and is more environmentally-friendly than the current model, but developers say they should eliminate dark spots commonly found in between current light posts.

It's made possible by both diffusing the light more efficiently and since many little LEDs would take the place of the one high-pressure sodium bulb used today, each LED can be aimed to beam light at a wider angle. The LED developers at the Lighting Science Group Corporation say while the bulbs will have the potential to change color, that's not in the immediate plans, but they will be greener in one sense.

To get an idea, they can reduce energy consumption at each street lamp by about 25 to 30 percent immediately. That's just one-to-one comparison. They also have the energy savings because of the control systems. Turn it on, turn it off, and dim it down as the ambient lighting increases or decreases.

Low-energy, long-lasting LED lights to be the mainstream

It’s known that LEDs are becoming more commonly used for under-cabinet lighting in kitchens, the reddish glow of the LEDs helps warm up the cool colors in his kitchen. The future is looking brighter for LEDs, the next generation of energy-efficient lighting.

LEDs still cost much more than incandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs, but its prices are dropping. Rising energy prices also have helped raise public awareness of the miserly LEDs, which are available in an increasing variety of lighting products.

This month lighting designer John Cale opened Green Light, a store that specializes in LEDs, in downtown Overland Park. In addition to building custom lighting pieces, Cale can retrofit any existing light fixture to use LEDs, starting at $30 plus parts. Green Light also sells LED bulbs. LEDs are great for accent lighting, task lighting and indirect lighting, Cale custom-built some LED fixtures for the addition, including sconces and a fabric-diffused chandelier. In the library, LED rope lighting that outlines the crown molding changes to red, green, purple and yellow in a soft, pleasant glow. LEDs fill silvery glass pendant fixtures in the bathroom. Recessed LED cans are installed in the sunroom ceiling. LED sconces accent the bedroom. Fabric-shaded LED chandeliers hang in different rooms. That’s because LEDs can last 50,000 hours or more than 20 years, about five times longer than compact fluorescent bulbs and 50 times longer than incandescent bulbs.

Because of their diminutive size and their ability to withstand temperature changes, LEDs are becoming a more popular choice for unobtrusive low-voltage landscape lighting. The Cleveland-based manufacturer Kichler makes LEDs to illuminate trees, paths and patios.

As their price has dropped, LEDs also have become more mainstream for strings of holiday lights. The C9 and C7 incandescents are brighter than their LED counterparts, but mini LED lights are brighter than mini incandescent holiday lights.

SOL Inc. Arranges for Solar Led Lighting Systems to Improve Quality Of Life for Earthquake Victims in Peru

Sol Inc. (Solar Outdoor Lighting) has arranged for the donation of 42 solar lighting systems to 11 communities in Peru affected by the August 2007 earthquake. Philanthropist David Russell, who, funded the donation with the assistance of Practical Action of Peru and local governments facilitated a partnership with Sol Inc. to ensure the donated lights were installed where they were needed most.

The solar lighting systems were recently installed in the Peruvian communities of Nuevo Amanecer, Marcas, Quilca, Yanapampa, Huancho, Buenavista, Tantas, Uchapa, Chacará, Huayao and Castrovirreyna. The solar lighting systems are lighting streets, pathways, and community "plaza" squares.

"We felt compelled to do what we could for the victims of this earthquake and we thought that our solar lighting would help address some of the challenges facing these communities so affected by this tragedy." said Michael W. Sonnenfeldt, chairman of Sol Inc. "Public lighting is often critically important to the economic and social activities of a community and our solar lights will enhance the safety and security of these communities. Public lighting extends the daily life of a small town whether it is for children playing or allowing a market to remain open a few hours longer. We learned from our previous relief efforts donating solar lighting units to New Orleans and other Gulf Coast cities affected by Hurricane Katrina that working with local government agencies and world class relief agencies involved in the recovery efforts is critically important to ensure the successful installation of the donated solar lights. Practical Action really made this happen."

Sol took the initiative to identify the project, the local needs, and arranged for a donor who could rely on Sol to manage the entire process from beginning to end. Sol donated all of the logistical efforts to augment the contributions to make the project happen.

Philanthropist David Russell, who underwrote the project added; "I wanted to help the victims of the earthquake, but I wanted to fund a specific effort where I could be sure where my contribution was going, and for what. Sol provided a complete solution that literally allowed me to write a single check, and they took care of the rest, professionally and in very difficult and complicated circumstances. This opens up a whole range of possibilities for foundations and philanthropists who often have the intent but not the infrastructure to help victims of one type of disaster or another."

"In the evening, families would normally retreat into their households. Thanks to the efforts of Practical Action and Sol Inc., people now gather under the solar lights for social activities and watch their children play in a secure environment," said Federico Salas, Governor of Huancavelica Region in Peru, the region most affected by the earthquake.

The powerful 8.0 magnitude earthquake hit the southern coastal province of Ica in Peru last August killing over 400 people and injuring another 1500. More than 16,500 people were displaced or otherwise affected by the quake.

About Sol Inc.

Sol is a world leader in the development and distribution of Solar LED lighting. Sol is the oldest manufacturer focused on outdoor solar lighting systems with over 18,000 systems installed in more than 50 countries on six continents. Sol has introduced innovative, reliable and cost-effective solar lighting systems for over 15 years that provide unsurpassed levels of illumination and reliability. Sol develops, manufactures and markets commercial/industrial-grade solar powered and energy efficient lighting systems for a wide range of lighting applications including area and security, street and roadways, sign and billboards and transit and shelter lighting. Sol’s commitment is to superior design, manufacturing, and customer satisfaction as verified by our ISO 9001:2000 certification.

About Practical Action

Practical Action, formally known as Intermediate technology Development Group (ITDG), is a charitable Non- Government Organization registered in the United Kingdom, which works directly in four regions of the developing world – Latin America, East Africa, Southern Africa and South Asia to demonstrate and advocate the sustainable use of technology to reduce poverty in developing countries.

Austin Energy is joining a national effort to develop new, energy efficient light bulbs made from LEDs. Those light-emitting diodes are commonly used in billboards and traffic signals, and new developments in the field mean they could soon be used in everyday office and home environments.

"We've arrived with a wide variety of LEDs," said Austin Energy Acting CEO Roger Duncan. "What we're going to be doing in Austin is testing these out."

New LED bulbs have already been installed in the parking garage at the One Texas Center office building. While the bulbs cost more initially that regular light bulbs or compact florescent bulbs, Duncan said they are much more energy-efficient than either of those technologies. "A 75 watt incandescent light bulbcosts $13 for the year to produce the light from that bulb," he said. "The LED that we have next to it costs only $1.79 per year to operate."
