A Brief Discussion on the Advantages of Automotive LED Application

LED is made up of a very small chip packaged in the epoxy resin. Generally, the operating voltage is 2-3.6V and the operating current is 0.02-0.03A. Traditional incandescent lamp emits light depending on tungsten filament, and the power-saving lamp depends on tricolor powder. Different from these two kinds of lamps, LED emits light through electric field. Long lifespan, high efficiency, absence of radiation and energy saving is the advantages of LED light. These advantages destined it to replace traditional light sources and to be used extensively. In automobile field, as requirements for better appearance design, environmental protection and aerodynamics are increasing day by day, LED is gradually put into use in automobiles as instrument indicating lamp’s backlight, front and back direction lights, brake indicator, back-up light, fog light, reading light and so on. Apart from its excellent functional usage, LED light also bears decoration advantages, making the functional lights to become colorful in automobiles.

Listed below are the advantages of adopting LEDs in automobiles:

1. Short response time: traditional glass bulb responses slower, with a 0.3 second’s delay. LED light responses and lights without delay, thus can decrease the possibility of automobile accidents, preventing end collision of automobiles.

2. Better aseismatic performance: as LED is fully packaged in epoxy resin, it is much firmer than bulb and fluorescent lamp.

3. High purity: the wavelength error of LED light is smaller than 10nm, thus the light doesn’t need to be filtrated through lamp cover.

4. Low lighting heat: so the heat tolerance performance of the lamp materials is not highly required.

5. LED light beams are concentrated and easier to control: so reflectors are not needed to concentrate lights and the depth of lamps is minished.

6. Low power consumption: with the electrical energy utilization rate reached as high as 80%, LED’s power consumption accounts for only 6% of traditional bulbs with same brightness.
7. Long life-span and low fault rate: as LED light has no filament structure, glass and the like components which are easily damaged and the lighting heat is low, the lamps have a very low fault rate. Generally, it can be used for more than 6 years without maintenance.

8. The circuit is controlled by the automobiles, so it is not easy to get oxidated.

9. Small and light: LED light can be put into use in various kinds of lamps that is thin and compact, saving space for automobiles.

10. Protect the environment: LED light meets the requirements of green automobiles because it has no superfluous infrared spectrum and ultraviolet spectrum, hydrargyrum and other injurants, emitting low heat and low radiation.

As LED is a compounded semiconductor module, the discreteness of its electrical, optical, calorific and mechanical parameter index is large. When designing LEDs used in automobiles, comprehensive considerations should be paid to classify LED light source components strictly.
