Jarman Square, previously known as Leisure World, is a new leisure park in Hemel Hempstead.

With the re vitalized complex welcoming a host of popular new restaurants and leisure facilities, the project team wanted to use lighting in an engaging way to enhance the visitor experience.

With this in mind, the design brief was to illuminate the 95 metre long perforated steel facade above the main restaurant building. This needed to be implemented in a way that would highlight the panels, as well as create a moving light show with a strong visual impact.

It became clear that the best way to achieve the objective would be to graze the panels with coloured light that would scroll and dynamically change colour. Working with the contractor, Architainment Lighting specified, supplied and commissioned 82 Color Graze QLX Powercore LED units from Philips Color Kinetics. Their 10 degree by 60 degree beam angle ensures that light grazes evenly up the panels, whilst also ensuring an even blending of the scrolling colours horizontally along the panels.

A prime reason for selecting the Color Graze QLX is its Powercore technology, since it merges line voltage with control signals and delivers them to the fixture directly over a single standard cable. This minimizes the requirement for individual power sources, dramatically simplifies installation and lowers total system costs.

A Philips iPlayer3 control solution was specified to manage the dynamic graze lighting, due to its ease of use, and ability to accept triggers from the existing Building Management System to activate specific shows. The net result of using the Color Graze QLX Powercore and iPlayer 3 combination is a scrolling spectrum of light across the canopy that changes colour according to customer defined light shows.

Tony Fothergill of Electec Services comments “ As a Philips Certified Value Added Partner, Architainment’s expertise of dynamic coloured lighting solutions was very evident throughout the whole project. Not only did they ensure that the technical specification was correct, but they were very supportive during the installation phase, and helped with the final commissioning to ensure that the project was completed on time and on budget “

Paul Vallis of Architainment comments “ The new dynamic graze lighting solution creates a very impressive visual impact for visitors, and also makes a strong statement about the transformation of Jarman Park into a first class leisure development”
