Lighting Upgrade Enhance Workouts at MBS CrossFit

Terralux, a leader in the design and manufacture of commercial LED lighting and building control products, has completed a retrofit lighting project at MBS CrossFit in Arvada, Colo. Opened in 2008 by six-time CrossFit Games competitor Patrick Burke, MBS recently expanded its Arvada location at a converted warehouse facility. While members had more room to work out in the new facility, the gym inherited a lighting problem that it turned to Terralux to remedy.

Not only did the warehouse have several light fixtures that had stopped functioning altogether, others flickered constantly, creating a less than desirable atmosphere for intense concentration and hardcore workout sessions. The 175-watt mercury vapor surface mounted luminaires were so outdated that replacement parts could not be ordered to repair the broken lights, but MBS wanted to upgrade without creating the unnecessary waste of trashing the fixtures altogether.

After an internet-of-things retrofit project completed by Terralux at MBS CrossFit in Arvada, Colo., lighting in the gym is crisp and bright. (Terralux/LEDinside)

Terralux provided an ideal solution with the ability to convert the existing fixtures to more energy efficient LEDs with its SR12, surface mounted, 32-watt, round, 12-inch LED retrofit kit. During the retrofit, lamps and ballasts were removed and existing wires were reconnected to the SR12 retrofit kit, enhanced with LEDSENSE® for 0-10V lighting control, and placed inside the existing housing. In addition, remote wireless switches and occupancy sensors were installed in the space, which allows for dimming capabilities. While maintenance to replace lamps, ballasts or sockets on the existing lights used to take an hour per fixture, the Terralux kits only took 10-15 minutes to retrofit per fixture and are guaranteed to be maintenance free for seven years.

“We are happy to be able to enjoy our new facilities with our members minus the flickering and oddly colored lighting that we inherited from the previous occupants,” said Burke. “Not only did we eliminate a time-consuming maintenance task, we are also benefiting from more energy efficient and controllable lighting.”
