QD Vision Targets 4K UHD TV Market - LEDforum 2013

4K UHD TVs are unquestionably a market highlight this year. QD Vision and Sony have joined forces to work on QD technology to reach higher color rendering and a wider color spectrum by using high pressure technology to seal quantum dot and phosphor into glass tubes, paired with blue LED chips. Aside from Sony, the company is also discussing cooperation opportunities with other panel manufacturers, said John Ho, Advanced Development Manager, QD Vision.

QD Vision was invited to give a presentation at this year’s LEDforum hosted by TrendForce. During an interview with the media at the conference, Ho remarked that QD Vision’s future goal is to take QD technology applied in TV backlighting to tablets. The company is also currently in the R&D process for QD On-Chip technology and anticipates launching the products within one to two years. Upon its release, QD technology will also have the chance to expand LED lighting market applications.

With intensifying TV market competitions this year, big brands have continued to launch cheaper or more advanced QD technology. Sony launched QD technology TRILUMINOS Display to counter the OLED TV camp in 2013. . QD technology out performs regular LED TVs which use blue LED to directly coat the phosphor. By using high pressure technology to seal quantum dot and phosphor together inside lighting tubes, QD technology is able to reach an even broader color spectrum including more vivid greens and blue, while also enhancing color saturation.

Following mass production of QD technology LED TVs, QD cost will become more competitive, said Ho. Sony’s BRAVIA HDTV with QD technology was launched this year at a more consumer friendly price than OLED TVs. With the exclusive technology license agreement between Sony and QD Vision ending, the company is currently discussing technology cooperation opportunities with various panel manufacturers and brand manufacturers. The company revealed Korean TV manufacturers are less receptive to new technology due to their advantages in the TV market. Chinese and Taiwanese panel manufactures and brand named manufacturers, however, have higher acceptance for new technology applications.
