Epistar Reports Revenue Decline in November, while Unity Opto Shows Growth

Epistar announced revenue last month was down, due to low blue LED utilization rate.

The company’s revenue was down 15% to NT $1.77 billion (US $ 56.79 million) compared to NT $1.91 billion as of October, or a decline of 14.66% YoY. Epistar has reported monthly revenue declines for five consecutive months. Total consolidated revenue for January to November 2014, however, grew 27.13% YoY to NT $25.68 billion.

Epistar’s blue LED utilization rates during November fell to 50% from 90% as of September, the company said. The company has taken the chance to operate annual maintenance in nine of its Taiwan factories. Overall utilization rates for Epistar is expected to reach rock bottom this month, according to the financial institute.

Meanwhile, Unity Opto recorded NT $ 877 million consolidated revenue in November, which was unchanged compared to October, but up 60% YoY. Total consolidated revenue for January to November 2014 was NT $8.34 billion, which exceeded total revenue as of 2013. Unity Opto received large volumes of LED bulbs and lighting fixture orders during November, and the number of orders will occupy the manufacturers production capacity till after Chinese Lunar New Year in 2015. The company found it difficult to keep up manufacturing speed, said spokesperson Jacky Weng. Unity Opto has just acquired new clients in Wide Color Gamut (WCG) products, and had already finished capacity expansion plans for 1Q15.

Unity Opto has seen significant revenue growth in the traditionally slack season in 4Q14 compared to last year, due to high client demands. The company’s new LED bulb orders remain hot selling items, while smartphone backlight shipment volume is consistently growing with the support of international brands and new clients. Even though, large-size TV backlight demands remained low.
