Connecticut Town Installs Wi-Fi Enabled LED Streetlights

News Source:

Plainville, a town located in Connecticut, U.S. is installing hundreds of LED streetlights with some featuring advanced connectivity technology, reported NBC Universal.

About 1,400 new LED streetlights have been installed, which is estimated to save the town US $70,000 annually in power savings.

In addition to ordinary LED streetlights, the town has installed 123 new lights with capacity to provide free Wi-Fi coverage.

About 25 of the 123 streetlights will act as access points that can receive 10 mbps signal beaming out of the municipal building.

Another 90 Wi-Fi lamps will function as extenders to transmit the signal around downtown Plainville.

Town officials are turning to income from advertisements to pay for the Wi-Fi’s annual service of more than US $10,000.

"With that, we are hoping it will offset any cost of maintenance for the Wi-Fi" said Assistant Town Manager Shirley Osle.

The new Wi-Fi service will be available in one month’s time, said town officials.
