Micro LEDforum 2018 – Macroblock Reveals Achievement of IC Design for Micro LED

Micro LED display has been considered as the next-generation display technology with its features of high resolution, high contrast, high brightness and wide viewing angles. To achieve these characteristics, driver IC is a key component during the manufacturing process. At Micro LEDforum 2018, LEDinside invited Macroblock, the LED driver IC specialist, to talk about how to fully realize the advantages of Mini and Micro LED display from the viewpoint of a driver IC maker.

(Kerry Huang, Manager of Micro-LED Department, Macroblock)

Kerry Huang, the manager of Micro LED Department at Macroblock, opened his speech with the introduction of HDR10 standard and then pointed out the strengths of Mini and Micro LED display. According to Huang, luminous efficacy would be influenced by the chip size. It is more challenging to design IC driver without affecting the emitting area. Therefore Macroblock developed an integrated driver IC that with only one driver IC can control many Micro LEDs.

Macroblock further developed a failure detection function to find out defects and to cover the functions which automated optical inspection (AOI) cannot access. Moreover, it could predict and identify the LED chips that will fail soon. The function will increase the efficiency of repairing before shipping and save the cost for future maintenance.

Macroblock has reported that the company will launch displays featuring Mini LED technology in 2H18. It has also been preparing its Mini LED production for Chinese smartphone vendors in Q4. As for Micro LED, Macroblock revealed that the related technologies are ready but the production will be dependent on the supply chain and it might be more certain by the second half of 2019.

To collect and share more insights of Micro LED technologies, LEDinside is currently hosting the 2018 Micro LED Technology Research Contest and would like to invite companies, academic institutions and other corporate entities to submit abstracts or outlines of their latest technical papers related to innovative Micro LED technologies.
