Samsung to Invest US $24.39B in New Small-Mid Sized OLED Fab

Samsung Electronics recently defied previous reports that the company was abandoning OLED production expansions in 2014. According to a Yonhap News Agency report, industry insiders analyzed the Korean manufacturer might be spending up to 25 trillion won (US$ 24.39 billion) in facility investments this year to raise OLED panel production by 8.6 percent compared to 2013.

Although, Samsung Electronic said in April its facility investments would be the same amount this year, Samsung Display, whose investments are combined with the former company has expanded investment in OLED production lines last month.

Samsung Display plans to manufacture OLED panels at a new plant under construction in Asan for the company’s wearable devices and tablet PCs.

"With the OLED production line scheduled to commence its operation in the first half of next year, the investment will be made starting in the second half of 2014," an official from Samsung Display said.

The plant is expected to cost around 3 trillion to 5 trillion won to construct with local analysts estimating Samsung injecting 2 trillion won during the first phase.
