West Berkshire Close to Completing GBP 7M LED Streetlight Upgrade

News Source:

The West Berkshire Council in UK is close to completing a GBP 7.24 million (US $10.43 million) LED streetlight upgrade project in the next few weeks.

In the last two years, the council replaced more than 10,000 streetlights with LEDs, and has also upgraded 3,500 lampposts.

The project will help the council save about GBP 290,000 per year, and cut energy consumption by 50%.

The replacement works are part of a GBP 7.24 million scheme, where nearly GBP 5 million is funded by the Department of Transport’s Challenge Fund.

The installer of the streetlight project, Volker Highways, started to roll out the project in Speen and Kintbury in July 2015, and has upgraded lights across the district. White LED lights have been installed throughout the district, except in heritage or conservation lighting areas.

The project is nearly complete with the team spending its last few weeks replacing lights that it was unable to carry out due to program of the works.

The conclusion of the project will be marked by Councillor Garth Simpson, executive member for transport, which joined the project team to help replace one of the last remaining sodium lights.
